Frederick Living celebrating its 125th anniversary
Frederick Living is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. For over a century, the organization has pursued the important mission to care for and enrich the lives of older adults, while valuing the staff, volunteers and community that serve them.
Frederick Living is a non-profit 501(c)3 senior living community in Zieglerville, Montgomery County, that has provided services to older adults from the surrounding area since the founding by members of the Eastern District Mennonite Conference, which is now part of Mosaic Mennonite Conference.
As we look back on our 125-year history, Frederick Living has grown and expanded its 72-acre campus and services to provide comprehensive, sympathetic and compassionate care for our community. It is a place that’s been loved by the people who live and work here for generations.
The Rev. Nathaniel Bertolet Grubb, born in Frederick in 1850, was the pastor of the large First Mennonite Church, Philadelphia. He negotiated to buy the defunct Frederick Institute in his hometown following a public auction with no acceptable bids, for the purpose of creating a home for older adults as a response to the call to “love our neighbor.” Purchased for $1,150, the Frederick Mennonite Home opened officially on Sept. 1, 1896, about six months after Grubb’s purchase.
Starting in February, we are celebrating with our staff and residents through a variety of on-campus activities, culminating in our 125th Anniversary Gala on Sept. 10.
