North Penn’s Francis, Pennridge’s Baker win SOL individual championsh­ips

North Penn’s Lucas Francis and Pennridge’s Maribeth Baker won the Suburban One League individual championsh­ips Wednesday afternoon at Earlbowl.

Francis overcame a slow start to win the boys competitio­n. After rolling a 176 in the first game, he responded with games of 258 and 235 for a 669 series. North Penn’s Tyler Johnson, Upper Moreland’s Brendan Trago and Hatboro-Horsham’s Nick Reinheimer all impressed with series of 617, 610 and 606, respective­ly.

Baker dominated the girls competitio­n with a 644 series. Finishing behind Baker were HatboroHor­sham’s Tori Bone and Upper Moreland’s Sarah Olszweski with series of 528 and 431, respective­ly.

Francis and Baker had the top averages in the SOL all season long. Francis averaged 227 and Baker 206.

Girls basketball

PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 69, HATBORO-HORSHAM 26 >> Abby Sharpe led all scorers with 17 points as Plymouth Whitemarsh cruised past Hatboro-Horsham to claim the outright SOL Liberty Division title.

Kaitlyn Flanagan finished with 13 points with Anna McTamney tallying 10 points for the Colonials (12-0, 9-0), who won their fourth outright SOL division/conference title in the past five years. PW won the SOL American Conference in 2016-17, 2017-18 and 20192020.

UPPER MORELAND 66, CHELTENHAM 29 >> Upper Moreland

made 11 3-pointers – four by Kiera Coyle – as it rolled to a third straight win in the SOL Freedom Division contest.

Holly Gohl paced the Golden Bears (11-2, 8-1) with 18 points, Coyle finished with 14 points while EmmyFaith Wood chipped in 11 points as UM led 3520 at halftime them outscored Cheltenham 20-3 in the third.

For the Panthers (1-8, 1-7), Umayrah Sulayman scored 12 of her game-high 19 points in the first half. DOCK MENNONITE 47, COVENTRY CHRISTIAN 18 >> Dock Mennonite’s Kenzie Derstine and Belinda Leisner combined for 29 points as the Pioneers outscored Coventry Christian 27-5 in the second half.

METHACTON 77, UPPER PERK 29 >> It’s the latest milestone in a 2021 season known all too well for the less-memorable distinctio­n of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Methacton girls basketball team, recently marking Nicole Timko’s achievemen­t and passing of the 1,000-point career plateau, celebrated an even more significan­t milestone Wednesday. Securing a 77-29 victory over Upper Perkiomen, the Warriors got head coach Craig Kaminski his 300th career victory.

In his 19th season heading the program — he was an assistant nine years — Kaminski lifted his career mark to 300-187, a .616 winning percentage. The achievemen­t was secured in quick order, Methacton (9-2 overall) building a 5413 halftime lead on the Indians (1-12) in this Pioneer Athletic Conference divisional crossover game.

Mairi Smith headed Methacton’s balanced trio of double-figure scorers, collecting 17 points along with nine rebounds and five steals. Cassidy Kropp added 16 points and six assists, and Timko had 15 points with eight assists.

Erin States headed the UP lineup with 15 points. SPRING-FORD 34, POPE JOHN PAUL II 30 >> Spring-Ford completed its 14-0 run through the PAC but got its biggest test of the year in the process by the Golden Panthers.

Lucy Olsen scored 12 for the Rams, which were held to a season-low 34 points. PJP was led by Kallan Bustynowic­z’s 11 points. PJP trailed 31-22 entering the fourth and didn’t allow S-F to pull away, getting within four but unable to pull off the upset.

Boys basketball

METHACTON 64, UPPER PERKIOMEN 25 >> Jason Price headed a trio of double-figure scorers that underwrote the Warriors’ PAC divisional crossover victory over the Indians Wednesday.

Price’s game-high 16 points put him one ahead of teammate Cole Hargrove (15) and three above Brett Byrne (12). They all helped Methacton (6-3) open a 3516 lead on UP in the first half.

Nick Aron was the Tribe’s scoring leader with nine points.

Mahmood Hashamy led Daniel Boone with 10 points.

DOCK MENNONITE >> The Dock Mennonite boys basketball team earned the rare two wins in one night Wednesday as the Pioneers

swept a home doublehead­er, first topping Chester Charter 61-45 then besting MaST Charter 62-51.

Steve Martin scored 25 points in the opener, which had Dock (9-3, 7-0 BAL) build a 34-22 halftime lead. Chester Charter cut the margin to eight at the end of the third but the Pioneers outscored the Sabers 21-14 in the fourth.

In the second game, Hoyt Bultje paced Dock with 17 points as the Pioneers jumped out to a 26-15 lead after a quarter and went to earn their fifth straight victory.

ARCHBISHOP WOOD 79, ROMAN CATHOLIC 69 >> Archbishop Wood’s Rahsool Diggins scored 14 of his teambest 20 points in the first half as the Vikings built a 40-25 lead after two quarters then held off Roman Catholic to stay undefeated.

Daeshon Shepherd added 19 points for Wood (6-0, 6-0 PCL) while Muneer Newtown collected 10 of his 18 points in the third.

Xzayvier Brown scored 17 of his game-high 21 points in the second half for Roman (4-1, 4-1). Khalil Farmer finished with 20 points, nine coming in the fourth.

UPPER DUBLIN 62, PENN WOOD 56 >> Drew Stover scored nine of his gamehigh 21 points in the fourth quarter as Upper Dublin erased a five-point halftime deficit to win its fourth straight.

Seaton Kukla collected 10 of his 13 points in the second half for the Cardinals (9-5, 5-4 SOL Liberty).

Sayo Kenneth led Penn Wood with 12 points with Abdullah Dublin posting 11 points.
