Learning History Together: An invitation from UD Chinese American community
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) heritage month. Our hearts and thoughts first go to our brothers and sisters in India, and we wish them a speedy end to the suffering from the COVID-19 spread.
2020-2021 has proven to be extremely unusual for many [Upper Dublin] Chinese Americans. During the pandemic, we helped the community fight the virus by donating PPEs and fundraising for our local food bank. We supported our Black communities and friends in the
BLM movement. We witnessed through media a sharp increase in the number of victims of AntiAsian hate crimes fueled by the “China Virus” and “Kung Flu.” We were shocked by the Atlanta massacre and dismayed to see the surfaced fetishization and hypersexualization of Asian women. Therefore, some of us joined the Stop Asian Hate Rally and marched in the rain in Philadelphia. We applaud the recent passing of the Anti-Asian Hate Crime Bill. We are seeking solidarity, mutual understanding and respect, and calling for justice for all.
In celebration of AAPI Heritage Month, we cordially invite you to join a webinar on May 15, 7:308:30 p.m. The presentation, “From Foundations to Frontiers”, is based on a landmark study of the enduring contributions of Chinese Americans to American society from the 1800s to the present day. The evidence-driven study details the contribution across the following seven industries: Arts & Culture, Civil Rights, Public Service and Politics, Business
Leadership & Entrepreneurship, Infrastructure, Military & National Security, Public Health, and Science & Technology. This event will be a 30-minute presentation followed by a facilitated discussion. It is co-sponsored by Upper Dublin Chinese American Association (UDCA), UD Asian American Students and Families group, Parents and Children Education (PCE) Club. We believe that those historical documentaries will help us better understand the past so we can find constructive ways to move forward together as a nation. We are grateful to live in the wonderful Upper Dublin school district, a place we call home. We look forward to working with community friends and supporting school curricular initiatives that embrace inclusion and multiculturism. Thank you for your camaraderie!
