2 local dairies have spots on state ice cream trail

There’s nothing quite like enjoying a scoop or two of ice cream on a hot day.

Or maybe, depending on just how hot it is and hungry you are, three or four scoops.

State officials are making sure that when that sweet tooth starts aching and the scorch of summer turns thoughts toward cool treats, locals and tourists head for a local creamery.

At an event at one such creamery Wednesday, Urban Churn in Mechanicsburg, Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding and Department of Community and Economic Development Deputy Secretary Carrie Fischer Lepore officially launched Scooped: An Ice Cream Trail.

This is the fourth year the state has promoted a statewide ice cream trail. This time around featuring a total of 31 creameries, including two in Montgomery County.

“This ice cream trail provides consumers an opportunity to experience Pennsylvania’s rich agricultural heritage while learning more about the dairy industry, supporting small businesses and enjoying a scoop, or several, of PA Preferred ice cream,” Redding said. “Whether it’s a reward following a Little League win, a salute to reuniting with family and friends or a tribute to a hot summer day, there’s a lot to celebrate about and with Pennsylvania dairy.”

Lepore said that after all the difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the ice cream trail comes as a welcome reprieve.

“While 2020 was a year of being cooped up, in 2021 Pennsylvanians can scoop up some fun on this summer’s ice cream trail,” Lepore said. “We encourage our happy travelers to set out on new adventures all across the commonwealth, where they can enjoy a sweet treat, make sweet memories and support Pennsylvania’s small businesses and dairy industry.”

The trail is broken into three regions: west, southcentral and east.
