Cannoneers brace for state tourney

The Cannoneers Sr Babe Ruth Baseball team (19u) is set to begin state playoffs this weekend in Boyertown.

Led by team veterans in Mathew Costello, Aiden Elam, Lucas Kile, Jonathan Jupina, and Noah Walton, as well as newcomers in Quinn Annan, Paul Brigidi, Peyton Brown, Jake Bruno, Ben Criger, Kyle O’Connell, Conner Rasmussen, Deven Ross, Nicholas Sockwell, and Aidan Tamburro, the Cannoneers are poised to make a deep run into the state tournament this year.

Through (16) games this season, the team has been led offensivel­y by Costello with 16 runs batted in (RBIs) as well as 2 home runs followed closely by Brigidi with 12. Conner Rasmussen and Aiden Elam have been consistent at the plate all year and lead the team in batting average with .478 and .462 respective­ly. O’Connell leads the team in walks with 20 this season.

On the pitching side, the Cannoneers are led by four solid starters in Criger, Costello, O’Connell, and Rasmussen coupled with a battery of relievers in Brigidi, Brown, Bruno, Elam, Jupina, and Sockwell. O’Connell leads the team in strikeouts, 34, and innings pitched, 21 1/3, and has given up only 14 earned runs in those appearance­s. Criger and Rasmussen lead the team in era with 1.00 and 1.75 respective­ly, and Conner has 3 wins in his 3 starts this season.

The Cannoneers were slated to begin the weekend opposing Chester County at 4pm on Friday afternoon at Harner Field.

Swimming

PSC TIES BROOKSIDE >> The PSC High Point Stingrays hosted Brookside Swim Club Bullfrogs in the first of the LBSL Red Division (A Division) dual meets. The meet went back and forth, and it ended up with both teams tied 240 to 240. There were many races decided by tenths and hundredths of a second. In the end, both teams left it all in the pool, and it showed in their performanc­es. It is the first tie in the 38 year history of the PSC High Point Stingrays.

Record-breaking swims were done by Haley Schooler in the 15-18 100 back (1:04.52, pool, team and league record), Brandon Fleck in the 14 and under 100 free (55.14, pool and league record) 100 back (1:02.83, pool record) and 100 breast (27.24, pool record).
