Whitemarsh, Fort stay alive in Region 3
Joe Redmond and Jason Kelly each had four RBIs, Mike Miller hit a two-run home run in the third inning and Whitemarsh remained in the Pennsylvania American Legion Region 3 Tournament by routing Concord 17-3 in four innings Saturday at Ram Stadium.
Redmond had a pair of doubles and also tripled in going 3-for-3 with a walk and four runs scored as Whitemarsh moves on to play either Downingtown or Northampton 12:30 p.m. Sunday in an elimination game.
Whitemarsh jumped to a 4-0 lead in top of the first then added three more in the second. Concord plated a pair in the bottom of the second to make it 7-2 but Whitemarsh pulled away by scoring five runs in both the third and four frames.
Kelly went 2-for-3 with a double, walk and scored twice for the GNALBL champs, who totaled 12 hits. Ryan Flaherty finished 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored, Quindarius Dye was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored while Miller had three RBIs and scored twice.
Starting pitcher Ryan Coscia claimed the win for Whitemarsh, allowing two runs — one earned — on three hits in two innings. He walked two and struck out three. Robert Markey pitched the last two innings, giving up one run — earned — on two hits and a walk.
Whitemarsh’s offensive ex
plosion began in the top of the first with back-to-back RBI doubles from Redmond and Kelly. A Daulton Carlisle RBI sacrifice fly and Flaherty’s RBI sac fly made it 4-0.
In top of the second, Dye hit an RBI single and scored on Redmond’s RBI triple. A Miller RBI sac fly brought in Miller for a 7-0 Whitemarsh lead.
After Concord got within five by scoring two runs in its half of the second, Whitemarsh answered with a five-spot in the top of the third. Redmond connected on his second RBI double, Kelly followed with a twoRBI single with Miller making it a 12-2 advantage with his two-run blast to left.
Whitemarsh tacked on five more runs in the fourth. Eddie Owens brought in the inning’s first run with an RBI sac fly. Consecutive bases-loaded walks by Redmond and Kelly made it 152. Gabriel Rosley and Redmond both scored on wild pitch for a 17-2 lead.
Joshua Ponzio was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored for Concord. FORT WASHINGTON 7,
BROOMALL NEWTOWN 4 >> Nate Dennis went 3-for4, including a RBI single during Fort Washington’s three-run bottom of the sixth that helped the Golden Generals hold off Broomall Newtown and stay in the Region 3 Tournament.
David Sharp finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run for Fort, which faces either Falls or host Spring City in an elimination game 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
Gabe Franczyk was 2-for-3 with a walk, triple and RBI while Ryan Deal went 2-for-3 with an RBI as the Golden Generals registered 11 hits.
Fort led 4-0 after scoring twice in the first then adding a run each in the third and fourth. Broomall Newtown cut the margin in half with a Justin Brennan RBI single in the top of the fifth then Joseph Downs’ RBI sac fly in the top of the sixth.
Fort, however, responded in its half of the sixth. Sharp gave the Lower Montco champs a 6-2 edge with his two-out, two-RBI single. Sharp then stole second, went to third on an error and scored on Dennis’ RBI single for a four-run lead.
The insurance proved to be beneficial as Broomall Newtown made a comeback bid in the top of the seventh. Alex Bruno led off with a double, took third on a wild pitch and came home on Brennan’s RBI sac fly. Owen Mathes followed with a triple and scored when James O’Brien reached on an error to make it 7-4.
After a fly out, Josh Dell’Arciprete singled and Thomas Lucchesi walked to load the bases with two outs but the next batter flied out to keep the Generals in the double-elimination tournament.
Fort starting pitcher Tristan Helmick got the win, allowing two runs — one earned — on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked two, hit one batter and struck out two. Deal pitched the last 1 2/3 innings to pick up the save, allowing two runs — one earned — on three hits, walked one and struck out one.
Broomall Newtown’s Jason Anderson took the loss in a complete-game effort, allowing seven runs — four earned — on 11 hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out two.
Dell’Arciprete finished 2-for-4 with a run scored while Bruno was 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored.
