Whitemarsh, Fort Washington swung hot bats at Region 3

Sabater stands out for Nor-Gwyn in Region 2

Being held to just one hit in a 7-0 loss to Northampto­n in the Pennsylvan­ia American Legion Region 3 Tournament final Tuesday was not indicative of the way Whitemarsh swung the bats over five days at Ram Stadium.

The Patriots racked up a bevy of extra-base hits in plating a total of 48 runs in its six regional contests, three times scoring in double digits — including an 11-9 victory over Fort Washington in Tuesday’s opening game that saw the teams combine to total 12 runs in the sixth inning.

“We had big hits with men on base all tournament — from one to nine hitters, everybody knocked in runs,” Whitemarsh coach said Dave Eckelmeyer Tuesday after the title game. “And just today, you go cold sometimes.”

Of the Patriots’ 49 hits in the tournament, 20 went for extra bases. Ten different players recorded an extra-base hit with Jason Kelly and Joe Redmond both leading the team with three — Kelly had three doubles while Redmond’s two doubles and a triple all came in the 17-3 win over Concord last Saturday. Mike Miller, meanwhile, belted a home run in each of Whitemarsh’s first two games.

“Well after losing the first game (4-3 to Falls last Friday) we all kind of got together and said we’re already here why not win it so we went on a really nice run,” said Whitemarsh’s Dalton Carlisle, who had the Patriots’ lone hit in Tuesday’s final. “And like you said we played them (Northampto­n) last night and we hit the ball around really well and so that gave us a lot of confidence going into today.
