TOWAMENCIN >> Township officials have voiced their thanks for a grant to help plan a tribute to local veterans.

“This new grant makes it possible to move forward with the planning phase of the future park, by developing a park master plan,” said the township in a statement.

Located on Allentown Road just west of Forty Foot Road, the township’s “Veterans Memorial Park” is named in honor of those who have served, and stands adjacent to the township’s Tennis-Lukens cemetery, where several Revolutionary War veterans are buried.

The township held a ceremony on July 29 for the supervisors and the township’s veterans committee to formally thank state Sen. Bob Mensch, R-24th, for his support in securing several rounds of grant funds, including $25,000 from the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED)’s Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program to develop a master plan for the park.

“Not only will this project provide for recreation and educational opportunities, but it will honor the bravery and service of all our local heroes. That is just one of many reasons why I was happy to support this project,” Mensch said in a statement.

At the ceremony, Mensch was thanked and presented with a Betsy Ross flag plaque as a sign of appreciation from members of the veterans committee, the board of supervisors, township staff and residents. The grant funding will be used to help develop a park master plan, conduct an analysis of the site, prepare designs, and incorporate public opinion, via a study committee, an online survey, and a public review.
