GA grad Pluck has goal, assist as Duke women’s soccer stays undefeated

Mackenzie Pluck (North Wales/ Germantown Academy) had a goal and an assist as the Duke women’s soccer team scored four times in the first half in beating East Carolina 5-0 last Thursday.

Pluck tallied the game’s opening goal at 4:57 then picked up the assist as the Blue Devils took a 2-0 lead at 7:18.

Pluck is second on Duke — which has won its first six games — in goals (4), assists (2) and points (10).

• Susquehann­a field hockey goalkeeper Mackenzie Bross (Perkasie/Pennridge) was named National Field Hockey Coaches Associatio­n (NFHCA) Division III Defensive Player of the Week last Monday as the junior helped the River Hawks to victories over Christophe­r Newport and Salisbury.

Bross, who was also named Landmark Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week, made six saves in a 1-0 shutout win over Christophe­r Newport Sept. 4 then recorded another six saves in the 2-1 victory over Salisbury Sept. 5.

Last Wednesday, Bross had one save as Susquehann­a shut out Dickinson 1-0.

• Bucknell football’s Justin

Fisher (King of Prussia/ Upper Merion) was named Patriot League Football Rookie of the Week last Monday. Fisher tied for the game high with nine tackles — two solo, seven assisted — and also had a quarterbac­k hurry in the Bison’s 21-0 win over Sacred Heart Sept. 4.

• Josh Jones (Hatfield/ North Penn) scored his first collegiate goal as the Louisville men’s soccer team opened ACC play with a 3-0 victory over Wake Forest last Friday. The freshman defender gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead in the first half as he headed in a free kick at 27:29.

• Delaware football’s Liam Trainer (Glenside/La Salle) had his first career intercepti­on to along with five tackles — three solo, two assists with one tackle for loss — while Justis Henley (Philadelph­ia/North Penn) made four tackles (all solo) as the Blue Hens beat St. Francis (Pa.) 27-10 last Saturday to improve to 2-0.

• MK Stefanowic­z (Lansdale/Mount St. Joseph) scored twice for the Bucknell field’s hockey team in its 2-0 victory over Lock Haven Sunday.

Both of Stefanowic­z’s goals came on penalty corners — she gave the Bison

a 1-0 lead in the second quarter at 18:02 then doubled the advantage in the fourth, finding the back of the cage at 42:04.

Stefanowic­z also had an assist in Bucknell’s 2-1 win over Temple Sept. 5, earning the helper on the second-quarter goal that tied the game 1-1 at 15:24.

• Chestnut Hill College women’s soccer’s Bri Hewlett (North Wales/ North Penn) posted the first shutout of her college career, the senior goalkeeper making six saves — four in the first half — in a 1-0 win over Roberts Wesleyan last Saturday.

• Penn women’s soccer’s Janae Stewart (North Wales/Penn Charter) scored her first college goal, the assist going to Sizzy Lawton (Fort Washington/Upper Dublin) as the Quakers shut out George Washington 4-0 Sunday.

Stewart’s goal at 56:18 was Penn’s fourth of the contest, collecting the rebound of Lawton’s shot that hit the crossbar then put a volley over the keeper and into the net.

• Ursinus football’s Octavious Carter (Souderton/La Salle) had eight receptions for 77 yards while Billy Cook (Southampto­n/Archbishop Wood) had three catches for 24 yards and a touchdown — hauling in a twoyard TD pass at 8:51 the second quarter — as the Bears lost to Johns Hopkins 49-21

last Saturday.

For UC’s defense, Brett Gross (Langhorne/Archbishop Wood) had an intercepti­on and six tackles (four assisted, two solo with one tackle for loss) while Ryan DiVergilis (Philadelph­ia/ Archbishop Wood) made five tackles (two solo, three assisted). Tristan Hulme (Doylestown/Central Bucks West) added three tackles, one solo and two assisted.

• Liberty field hockey’s Jill Bolton (Souderton/ Dock Mennonite) had an assist in the Flames’ 4-3 loss to Northweste­rn last Tuesday. Bolton’s assist came in the third period as Liberty pulled even 2-2 at 44:01.

• Marco Grenda (Perkasie/Pennridge) had two goals while Jerry Bardol (Fort Washington/Upper Dublin) while also scored as the Ursinus men’s soccer team defeated Neumann 3-1 last Saturday.

Grenda pulled the Bears even 1-1 with his goal at 25:24 with Bardol giving UC the lead late in the first half, striking at 44:17. Grenda made it a brace by scoring again at 49:27 for his sixth goal of the season.

Last Friday, Grenda also had a goal in Ursinus’ 5-0 victory over Gwynedd Mercy.

• Millersvil­le field hockey’s Georgia Werkiser (Norristown/Norristown) scored in the third quarter in the Marauders’ 2-1 double-overtime win over

Limestone last Saturday. The goal, which came at 32:25, was the third of Werkiser’s career.

• Drexel women’s soccer’s Melissa Lyon (Perkasie/Pennridge) and Kailey Horton (Meadowbroo­k/Abington) both scored in the first half as the Dragons extended their unbeaten streak to five with a 3-1 win over UMass Lowell Sunday.

Lyon converted a free kick to tie the contest 1-1 at 23:51 with Horan put Drexel ahead for good with her goal at 38:51.

• Ally Clark (Jamison/ Germantown Academy) scored the Columbia women’s soccer team’s first goal, finding the back of the net at 7:16 as the Lions claimed a 3-0 victory over Farleigh Dickinson Sunday.

• Delaware Valley football’s Tahmir Barksdale (Philadelph­ia/Archbishop Wood) returned a punt 51 yards for a touchdown at 10:24 in the fourth quarter as the Aggies topped Montclair State 26-2 last Saturday.

Barksdale also had two catches for 11 yards and two rushes for six yards. Julian White (Philadelph­ia/North Penn) finished with one reception for 10 yards and three rushes for 14 yards.

Defensivel­y for Delaware Valley, Yusuf Aladinov (Huntingdon Valley/ William Tennent) had seven tackles — two solo, five assisted — and 1.5 sacks. Dontae Mason (Philadelph­ia/

Bishop McDevitt) had four tackles (one solo, three assisted) while Cole Kitchen (Hatboro/Upper Moreland) recorded three tackles (two solo, one assisted).

• Vanderbilt women’s soccer’s Maddie Elwell (Ambler/Wissahicko­n) scored three minutes into last Friday’s 2-0 victory over Lipscomb and also collected an assist Sunday as the Commodores lost to Middle Tennessee 2-1.

• Jamie Mayer (Huntingdon Valley/Lower Moreland) dished out two assists - one in the second, another in the third - as the Ursinus field hockey team rolled past Wilkes 8-0 last Wednesday. Mayer assisted on the Bears’ second goal at 19:23 then had the helper on the squads’ eighth tally at 37:27.

• West Chester football’s Jackson Taylor (Glenside/ Abington) had five tackles — 0.5 tackles for loss, one solo and four assisted — in the Golden Rams’ 56-10 win over Mercyhurst last Saturday.

Shamar Edwards (North Wales/North Penn) and Nick Chapman (Hatboro/ Hatboro-Horsham) both had two tackles — each recording a solo and an assisted tackle — for WCU.

• Maryland field hockey’s Julianna Tornetta (Plymouth Meeting/Agnes Irwin School) had a goal and an assist as the Terrapins topped Cal 4-0 Sunday.

Tornetta earned the assist as Maryland took a 2-0 lead at 31:56 then had the Terps’ last goal, finding the back of the cage at 58:23. Taylor Mason (Doylestown/ Central Bucks West) had two shots on goal for Maryland, who won its third straight in improving to 3-1.

• Caroline Sweeney (Lower Gwynedd/Gwynedd Mercy) capped the Northeaste­rn field hockey team’s 4-0 win over Holy Cross last Friday with a fourth-quarter goal, deflecting in a shot on a penalty corner at 52:06 as the Huskies earned their first victory of the season.

• East Stroudsbur­g football quarterbac­k Matt DeLaurenti­s (East Norriton/ Pope John Paul II) was 7-of15 passing for 75 yards and a touchdown — a 9-yard completion at 10:19 in the fourth quarter — as the Warriors lost 22-7 to Slippery Rock last Saturday.

ESU’s Ryan Hieber (Doylestown/Central Bucks West) recorded half a sack and finished with two tackles (one solo, one assisted).

• Gwynedd Mercy men’s soccer Shaine Kirby (Newtown/Archbishop Wood) scored his first career goal, finding the back of net at 44:12 in last Saturday’s 5-1 loss to Delaware Valley.

• Katie Cusomano (Lansdale/Gwynedd Mercy) scored the Catholic field hockey team’s lone goal at 39:21 in a 5-1 loss to Ursinus last Saturday.
