LANSDALE » All you zombies can skip the costumes this year.

Borough nonprofit Discover Lansdale announced this week that an annual tradition will be modified for the town’s Oct. 1 First Friday celebration.

“In response to many inquiries, there will indeed be a First Friday on October 1 — but, at least for this year, zombies will not walk the streets,” said the nonprofit in a statement.

“Because of concerns about the increase in the COVID infection rate, the large crowds that our annual event typically draws, and the difficulty in masking when one wears face paint, Discover Lansdale has regretfully made the decision to cancel the Zombie Walk portion of our monthly First Friday celebration,” Discover said.

Since 2013 the town has hosted a Zombie Walk, typically in October, which draws hundreds of costumed visitors to town as they proceed up and down Main Street. In light of COVID concerns, the theme has been changed, and will instead commemorate Fire Prevention Month, with family-friendly activities and live music performances.

“We STRONGLY encourage personal mitigation efforts, including masking and distancing, where possible, in keeping with county and state recommendations,” said Discover. “Thank you for your understanding. We at Discover Lansdale are fully committed to Lansdale remaining an enjoyable — and safe — environment to play, work and live.”

First Fridays typically run from 6 to 9 p.m., weather permitting, with road closures including S. Wood Street from Main to Courtland, Madison Street from Main to the end of the one-way, and Susquehanna Avenue from Main to Courtland. In the event of poor weather, a decision will be announced by 1 p.m. Friday on whether the event will proceed.

Other upcoming events in and around Lansdale include a “World Farm Animals Day” celebration at the Lansdale Farmers’ Market on Oct. 2, a Lansdale Historical Society annual spring tea on Oct. 23, and a series of events postponed from the borough’s rained-out Founders Day celebrations in August, including a planned beer garden, food festival, and evening fireworks show, also scheduled for Oct. 23.
