Different masks for different reasons

-

A couple of weeks from now I will see kids in their Halloween costumes walking in my neighborhood. No doubt there will be many of them wearing masks. I look forward to this fun time. I will be on the lookout for the different types of masks. Masks in this sense will be used to have fun.

During this pandemic, we use masks to prevent the spread of the Covid virus. This practice is necessary but is not fun.

However, there are those who wear masks, not physical ones, to hide their hurt and disappointments. Internally, they are struggling and wish that they do not have to go through such struggles. The mask they put on does not allow them to share these struggles with others. This can be a very difficult and lonely experience. But God sees everything. He sees our pain and struggles. God can use our pain to make us more like Jesus. Romans 8:28, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”

And then there are those who wear masks to hide their dark side. It must be hard to maintain this. God sees through this mask. The writer of Hebrews makes it very clear that God sees right through us, “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight” (4:13a). Please know that God’s desire is not to punish but rather to forgive and to give grace. This is the reason Jesus Christ came to die on a cross for us (Eph. 2:1-10). Mercy is available for us at the foot of the cross … God’s desire is that we run to it and confess.
