ALLENTOWN CENTRAL

CATHOLIC 4, LANSDALE CATHOLIC 1 » Allentown Central Catholic’s boys put on a dominant defensive display and Maksym Komperda and Ben Scandone took care of the offense in an opening-round showdown against Lansdale Catholic.

The Vikings improved to 18-3-2 and advanced to Saturday’s PIAA quarterfin­al round against District 4 champion Lewisburg at a site and time to be determined.

Komperda, a junior, recorded a hat trick — his 30th, 31st and 32nd goals of the season.

Scandone, a senior who started on the Vikings’ state championsh­ip lacrosse team in the spring, scored on an Olympico (a corner kick goal) in the second half and added two assists.

ARCHBISHOP CARROLL 3, HERSHEY 2 » Overtime wasn’t enough for Archbishop Carroll in the opening round of the PIAA Class 2A field hockey tournament Tuesday afternoon. The Patriots needed to go through a penalty-stroke shootout to get past Hershey at Arcadia University to advance to Saturday’s quarterfin­als.

Grace O’Neill, Sienna Golden and Beth Wineberg scored to give Carroll a 3-1 decision in the shootout after the teams battled to a 2-2 draw in two overtimes. Carroll goalie Reilly McMenamin stopped Hershey’s fourth shooter to end the shootout.

Courtland Schumacher and Megan Sheridan scored in regulation for the Patriots. McMenamin made eight saves.

Cara Cronin scored in the fourth quarter for Hershey to send the game into overtime.

Carroll takes on District 3 champ Twin Valley, a 5-3 winner over Upper Perkiomen, in Saturday’s quarterfin­als.

METHACTON 3, HAZLETON 0» The District 1 fourthplac­e Warriors traveled to District 2 champion Hazleton and brought home a PIAA-3A first round win

Tuesday.

Madison Noh got Methacton an early goal, Bene Catoia assisted Bayla Plower for the 2-0 lead and Elena Snodgrass sealed it in the second half.

Methacton faces District 11 champion Emmaus (23-0) in Saturday’s second round.

POPE JOHN PAUL II 3, CARVER E&S 0 » The District 1 Class 3A champion Golden Panthers eased into the PIAA second round by set scores of 25-5, 25-9, 25-10.

Pope John Paul II will face District 3 champion Spring Grove, a 3-0 winner over Archbishop Wood, in the second round Saturday at a site and time to be determined.
