PrimaryStages children’s fest runs Friday through Sunday
It will be held at the Yocum Institute for Arts Education, West Lawn
PrimaryStages Productions presents the Children’s Theater Festival of Berks County from Friday through Sunday at the Yocum Institute for Arts Education’s Schumo Theater, West Lawn.
The festival is a celebration of the return to theater and will offer stories of friendship, laughter, dance and music.
Events will include the following:
• “Elephant and Piggie’s We Are in a Play,” a theater production ripped from the pages of Mo Willems’ beloved, award-winning, bestselling “Elephant and Piggie” children’s books. Elephant Gerald and Piggie are joined by their nutty backup singers, the Squirrelles, as they discover the fun of being in a play, all the while encouraging the audience to join in for some interactive fun.
• Improv Night: Laughter Guaranteed, featuring members of the Talent Scholarship Teen Theater Ensemble and special guests performing selections from the Berks 24 Hour Play Festival.
• Barrio Alegría Presents … But We’re Still Here!, a community engagement project that takes the shape of a movement theater performance. Using the framework of classic fairy tales, presenters integrate social justice issues to start and continue conversations in the community.
• Something Beautiful, Cabaret with Corinna Sowers Adler, a Tony Award nominee for Excellence in Theatre Education, joined by a chorus of teen singers. Filled with magical songs, this event incorporates both well known and lesser known songs spanning genres from country to pop to Broadway.
• Garba-Raas Folk Dance & Art Workshop, in which participants will have the opportunity to paint and decorate their sticks that they will use in the GarbaRaas, a folk dance from India’s state of Gujarat that is popularly performed during the Hindu holiday of Navratri and other special occasion such as weddings.
