Library hosting virtual ‘African Ancestors’ program
The North Wales Area Library is planning several events to commemorate Black History Month and help residents build bridges and connections.
On Feb. 28 the library will host a virtual program titled “African Ancestors: ‘The Way We Were,” including music, spoken word and drama performances.
The engaging virtual program incorporates spoken word, images, and musical performance to bring awareness to many of the African Diasporic Tribes that we derived from before colonialism and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, which dehumanized enslaved African people throughout the Americas, Brazil and the Caribbean, a press release states.
This innovative performance piece is presented by Chavez Ravine, actor, vocalist, and creator of Ravine Arts Wellness, and Joseph Patterson, multimedia artist/producer and founder of Key Arts Productions.
Those interested in taking part can visit www.northwaleslibrary. org to register for the free virtual event.
On March 22 at 7 p.m., the library will host a virtual “Lit and Wit” chat with author Sadeqa Johnson, whose latest novel “Yellow Wife” was listed as one of O Magazine’s “Most Anticipated Novels of 2021,” and one of NPR’s “Best Books of 2021.”
The “Lit and Wit” virtual chat will allow participants to enjoy a treat bag at home while chatting live with the author on Zoom about the book. Those who buy virtual tickets will receive a link to the event, and tickets include a signed copy of the book, your choice of beverage, chocolates and a bookmark.
The library is also taking part in the worldwide “Human Library” program that originated in Denmark in 2000 and aims to address people’s prejudices by helping them talk to those they would not normally meet. The Human Library program allows humans to act as open books for conversations they would not normally have, to challenge prejudices through respectful conversation on topics such as race, sex, age, disability, sexual preference, gender identity, class, religion and beliefs, lifestyle choices, or other aspects of who they are. The library is currently recruiting individuals to take part in the program, who will take part in training before the program begins on April 9. Those interested in taking part can call (215) 699-5410 or email library Special Projects Coordinator Janeen Marzewski at jmarzewski@northwaleslibrary.org for more information.
