Eagles bring back Cox on 1-year deal

The Eagles announced a bit of news Saturday, although it paled in comparison to the blockbuster headlines generated by the Cleveland Browns and former Eagles executive Andrew Berry.

Defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, the player the Eagles couldn’t trade and then cut Thursday, agreed to return on a one-year contract.

The Browns on the other hand celebrated the acquisition of franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson, who the Eagles pursued for two years.

Running back Boston Scott also signed a one-year pact with the Birds for $1.75 million with incentives that could bump it to $2.25 million, per reports.

Linebacker Alex Singleton, the Eagles’ leading tackler the past two seasons, won’t be back as he signed with the Denver Broncos.

The Eagles will cross their fingers that the Browns don’t win a Super Bowl with Watson before they do with Jalen Hurts, Gardner Minshew or whoever else they line up behind center.

The Browns paid a steep price giving up three firstround draft picks and signing Watson to a five-year, $230 million contract extension, much of it guaranteed. Watson may have to sit out games as part of an NFL suspension if it’s found he violated the personal conduct policy.

Don’t think for a second the Eagles wouldn’t have made a similar deal happen had Watson felt Philly had a better shot at a championship than Cleveland.

It will be interesting to see how the Eagles spin Cox’s contract through the national news brokers, because they cut him rather than pay him the $18 million, he would have been due had he been on the roster after 4 p.m. Thursday. That cap-saving move kept them in the running for Watson, had he balked at waiving his no-trade clause for the other bidders.

Cox, 31, had just 3.5 sacks last season, dropping Sam Darnold, Garrett Gilbert twice, and Taylor Heinecke 0.5 times.

Scott, who turns 27 next month, has produced 14 touchdowns, 992 yards rushing and 62 receptions over the last three seasons. Last year he played through a sprained knee.
