Tappen named first team All-ACC

Wiss grad records 70-RBI season

Alex Tappen (Wissahicko­n) continued his career season at Virginia this week, as he became just the third Cavalier to ever record a 70-RBI season.

The fifth-year senior currently holds the third-highest singleseas­on RBI total in program history with UVA heading into the ACC tournament this week. Tappen, who has started all 53 games for the team this season, is batting .350 with 72 hits, 13 doubles, a triple and a career-best 13 home runs on top of 19 walks and three stolen bases and his 70 RBI.

For his stellar season Tappen was named first team All-ACC on Monday.

Tappen recorded an RBI on a sac fly in Thursday’s 4-1 loss to Louisville.

He was terrific at the plate in Friday’s 16-7 win over the Cardinals, going 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs and two RBI. Tappen has three four-run games this season and six in his career.

The Lower Gwynedd native reached the 70-RBI plateau with a sac fly in Saturday’s 11-3 loss to conclude the regular season.

• Binghamton’s Evin Sullivan (North Penn) was 4-for-6 with an RBI and three runs scored while Kevin Reilly (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was 3-for-6 including a two-run home run as part of a three-run, three-RBI outing in a 14-11 loss to UMBC on Thursday.

Sullivan went 2-for-5 with an RBI single Friday in a 7-1 win over UMBC.

In Saturday’s 12-3 win, Sullivan was 2-for-4 with a solo home run and RBI single plus a walk while Reilly was 1-for-6 with a run to conclude the regular season.

Sullivan started all 44 games he played this season and was second on the team with a .337 batting average. The freshman catcher/DH has 58 hits, 32 runs, 34 RBI, 12 doubles, a triple and 17 walks heading into the America East Tournament.

Reilly started 21 of 24 games,

hitting .286 with 17 RBI and 12 runs scored with five doubles, a triple and four home runs.

• West Chester advanced to the NCAA Division II Super Regionals after winning the Atlantic Regional with a 9-6 win in 11 innings over Seton Hill on Saturday. Mike Ferrara (Archbishop Wood) was 2-for-6 with two RBI, including one in West Chester’s three-run 11th, and a run scored while Justin Horn (Upper Dublin) was 1-for-5 with a walk, JR Gifford (Wood) was 1-for-4 with two runs and a walk and Zack Miles (North Penn) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.

Earlier in the day, the Golden Rams beat Seton Hill 5-4 to force the winner-take-all final. Horn was 2-for-4 with a double, walk and run scored while Ferrera was 1-for-4 with an RBI and scored the eventual winning run.

West Chester opened the regional with a 2-1 win over Slippery Rock on Thursday, with Ferrara and Horn both scoring on a first-inning single for the team’s only runs. Horn had a hit while Ferrara walked twice.

Despite a 3-for-5 showing including a solo home run

and two runs scored by Ferrara and 1.2 scoreless innings from Colin Kennedy (Hatboro-Horsham), the Rams dropped Friday’s game 18-7 to Seton Hill.

• Andrew Cossetti (La Salle) made the first pinchhit appearance of his college career a milestone one, hitting a home run in the Hawks’ 5-3 comeback win over St. Bonaventur­e on Saturday. The shot, his 16th of the season, was the 40th of his career as the Eagleville native became the first player in program history to reach 40 home runs as a Hawk.

He was 1-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI in Thursday’s 18-0 win over the Bonnies and 1-for-4 in Friday’s 9-6 win. Cossetti also went 1-for-3 with a run and a double in a 14-2 loss to Rutgers on Tuesday.

Cossetti is hitting .324 with 59 RBI, 61 hits and 57 runs scored heading into the A-10 Tournament. The catcher also has 15 doubles, two triples and 32 walks.

Softball

• St Francis (PA) saw its season conclude in the NCAA Regional round at Virginia Tech. In Friday’s 4-0 loss to the host Hokies, Jordan Pietrzykos­ki (North Penn) drew a walk as the only SFA player to reach base. In Saturday’s 4-0 eliminatio­n loss to Miami (OH), the infielder was 1-for-3 at the plate.

Pietrzykos­ki, a junior, started all 52 games she played this season while batting .331 with 55 hits, 35 runs scored and 27 RBI. She added seven doubles and three triples while going 13-of-15 on stolen base attempts.

• Kutztown’s stellar season ended in the Division II Atlantic Super Regionals against Seton Hill this weekend. Bean Hughes (Upper Moreland) was 1-for-3 at the plate in Thursday’s 7-0 loss. Hughes was 2-for-4 with a run scored in Saturday’s 9-5 season-ending loss.

For the season, the sophomore started 50 of 53 appearance­s with a .336 batting average, 48 hits, 31 RBI, 35 runs and had power with seven doubles and 11 home runs. She was also a perfect 9-of-9 on steals and worked 26 walks.

Sophomore Hannah Reimel (William Tennent) was a fixture in the lineup until a late-season injury reduced the infielder to a pinch-hitting role. Reimel played 54 games, starting 47 and recorded 40 hits at a .276 clip with 20 RBI, 23 runs scored, 13 doubles, four home runs and two steals.

Brittany Hubler (HatboroHor­sham) hit .333 primarily as a pinch-hitter, including a home run and two RBI in 13 games with one start.

NWSL

• Maddie Elwell (Wissahicko­n) made her profession­al debut on Wednesday, entering as a substitute in the 73rd minute of the Washington Spirit’s 1-1 draw with the Portland Thorns. Elwell, an Ambler native, was the team’s second round draft pick in December 2021 but signed on May 12 after finishing her last semester at Vanderbilt where she was a three-time All-SEC Selection.

NPSL

• Nevin Baer (Abington) and Josh Jones (North Penn) scored in the first half as the Philadelph­ia Ukrainian Nationals topped Jackson Lions FC 2-0 in their NPSL opener on Wednesday. Jimi Leder (CB West) added an assist on Jones’ goal.

Bailey Moyer (CB West), Tarin Morris (CB West), Carter Houlihan (North Penn), Reed Sturza (CB West) and Matt Harmon (Hatboro-Horsham) also featured for Ukrainian Nationals.

NBA Draft

• Villanova’s Collin Gillespie (Archbishop Wood) took part in the NBA Draft Combine last week and led all players with 15 assists against just one turnover in live game competitio­n. The fifth-year senior, the Big East Player of the Year and an All-American, was the Bob Cousy Award winner as the nation’s best point guard this past season.

MLB

• Jimmy Herron (La Salle) went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run as the Hartford Yard Goats topped Bowie 7-3 on Wednesday. In Thursday’s 6-3 win over Bowie, the Duke product was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a double.

Herron, currently in the AA level with the Colorado Rockies system, was 2-for-4 in Friday’s 10-3 loss to Bowie.

Rowing

• Bucknell’s Elizabeth Berlinger (Germantown Academy) was named All-Patriot League Second Team on Thursday. Bucknell had seven rowers named to the All-Pariot League.
