HATFIELD TWP >> Two longtime fixtures of the Hatfield Police Department are moving onward and upward.

The department marked the departure on Friday of longtime police lieutenant Jay Ciarlello and Detective Sergeant Rich Hoffner, as both move on to different posts in law enforcement.

“Both will be missed as co-workers and friends, they were a huge help in establishing where the department is today,” said police Chief Bill Tierney in a statement the department posted Monday, along with photos of a farewell ceremony for the two held Friday.

Ciarlello joined the department in 1997, served as a patrol officer for eight years before becoming a detective in 2005, and has worked as an accident reconstructionist on the department’s highway safety unit, as a field training officer, a coordinator for the Montgomery County drug task force, and as a commander with the former North Penn and current Central Montgomery SWAT team, before being promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 2019. He’ll be heading to New Hanover Township, where he was sworn in on March 2 as that department’s new police chief.

Hoffner has been with the department for almost as long: He joined the department in 1999 after a stint in the U.S. Marine Corps, and served 12 years as a patrol officer and 15 years on the regional SWAT team, before joining the detective division in 2010; he’ll be heading to Norristown to work in Montgomery County’s Detective Bureau, according to the department.

“Best of luck to both Jay and Rich, we are sure they have great success in front of them,” Tierney said.
