NP boys, UD girls among area teams in 2nd round of states

Knights get another tilt with District 1’s Coatesvill­e

The first round of the PIAA state playoffs are in the books and The Reporter/Times Herald/Montgomery Media area has a handful of teams that advanced to the round-of-16 in their classifica­tions.

The Class-2A girls and Class6A girls will play Tuesday while the Class-4A girls, Class-5A girls,Class-2A boys and Class-6A boys will play Wednesday.

Below are game-by-game looks at the area teams.

Boys

NORTH PENN VS. COATESVILL­E >> (18) North Penn matches up with (19) Coatesvill­e in the second round of the Class-6A playoffs Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Pottstown High School.

The Knights beat Central, 6452, in the opener while Coatesvill­e beat Scranton, 68-58.

This game is a rematch from the second round of the District 1-6A playoffs. North Penn won that game on Feb. 21, 64-60. Four Knights scored in double figures that night, led by Teddy McCalliste­r’s 15 points. Mario Sgro added 11 points, included turning onepoint deficits into one-point leads twice in the final minutes.

The winner will face the winner of (12-3) Archbishop Wood and (3-6) Chambersbu­rg in the quarterfin­als Saturday. ARCHBISHOP WOOD VS. CHAMBERSBU­RG

>> (12-3) Archbishop Wood faces (3-6) Chambersbu­rg in the second round of the Class6A playoffs Wednesday at Cedar Crest High School at 7:30 p.m.

The Vikings (17-8) handled Central Bucks East, 61-37, in the opener behind a balanced offensive attack. Carson Howard led the way with 15 points and Jalil Bethea added 13. Chambersbu­rg upset Plymouth Whitemarsh, 68-56.

The winner will face the winner of (1-8) North Penn and (1-9) Coatesvill­e in the quarterfin­als Saturday.

DOCK MENNONITE VS. SANKOFA

FREEDOM >> (1-1) Dock Mennonite Academy takes on (12-2) Sankofa Freedom in the second

round of the Class-2A playoffs Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Bensalem.

The Pioneers (24-2) beat Antietam, 59-40, in the opener as Nate Lapp scored 19 points and Hoyt Bultje added 18. Sankofa Freedom got past Tri-Valley, 65-69.

The winner will face the winner of (4-1) Muncy and (2-1) Holy Cross in the quarterfin­als Saturday.

Girls FAITH CHRISTIAN ACADEMY VS. SOUTH WILLIAMSPO­RT >>

(1-1) Faith Christian Academy will face (4-1) South Williamspo­rt in the second round of the Class-2A state playoffs at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Martz Hall in Pottsville.

Both teams cruised to victories in the first round. Faith (20-6) hammered Belmont Charter, 45-7, while South Williamspo­rt (21-6) beat Lancaster Mennonite, 64-22.

The winner advances to the quarterfin­als and will face the winner of (21) Montrose and (11-1) Marian Catholic Friday.

ARCHBISHOP CARROLL VS. PERK VALLEY >>

(12-3) Archbishop Carroll takes on (11) Perk Valley in the second round of the Class-6A playoffs at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School.

The Patriots (12-11) beat Neshaminy in the first round, 50-37, behind 15 points from Brooke Wilson and 13 points from Taylor Wilson. The Vikings (28-1) handled Red Lion, 57-43.

The winner will face the winner of (1-8) Springfiel­d Delco and (1-9) Abington in the quarterfin­als Friday.

ABINGTON VS. SPRINGFIEL­D >>

(1-9) Abington faces (1-8) Springfiel­d Delco in the second round of the Class-6A playoffs at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School.

The Ghosts (22-5) won their opener, 69-56, over Wyoming Valley West behind Cire Worley’s 29 points and Abril Bowser’s 19. Springfiel­d (20-7) beat Central, 59-41.

The winner will face the winner of (12-3) Archbishop Carroll and (1-1) Perk Valley in the quarterfin­als Friday.

UPPER DUBLIN VS. CEDAR CLIFF >>

(1-6) Upper Dulin matches up with (3-1) Cedar Cliff in the second round of the Class-6A playoffs Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Governor Mifflin Intermedia­te School.

The Cardinals (18-10) beat Bethlehem Liberty in the opener, 47-36, with sisters Amy and Megan Ngo shooting a combined 13for-14 from the free-throw line. Cedar Cliff (27-0) hammered Garnet Valley, 45-28.

The winner will face the winner of (1-4) Pennsbury and (7-2) Upper St. Clair in the quarterfin­als Friday.

LANSDALE CATHOLIC VS. JERSEY SHORE >>

(12-1) Lansdale Catholic takes on (4-2) Jersey Shore in the second round of the Class-4A playoffs at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Minersvill­e High School.

The Crusaders (24-2) are coming off a 64-52 win over Bishop McDevitt. Jaida Helm, Gabby Casey, Olivia Boccella and Nadia Yemola all scored in double figures for the Philadelph­ia Catholic League champs. Jersey Shore beat Wyoming Area, 52-39.

The winner will face the winner of (3-2) Delone Catholic and (11-1) Allentown Central Catholic in the quarterfin­als Saturday.

GWYNEDD MERCY ACADEMY VS. BETHLEHEM CATHOLIC >>

(1-4) Gwynedd Mercy Academy faces (11-1) Bethlehem Catholic in the second round of the Class-5A playoffs at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Pottstown High School.

The Monarchs (21-6) hammered Freire Charter, 59-34, in the first round behind Hannah Griffin’s 17 points and Bailey Balkir’s 15. Bethlehem Catholic (188) beat Upper Moreland, 4636.

The winner will face the winner of (1-1) West Chester Rustin and (2-2) Abington Heights in the quarterfin­als Saturday.

ARCHBISHOP WOOD VS. VILLA MARIA ACADEMY >>

(12-1) Archbishop Wood matches up with (1-2) Villa Maria Academy in the second round of the Class-5A playoffs at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bensalem High School.

The Vikings (21-5) beat Mount Saint Joseph Academy, 62-47, in the first round. Deja Evans scored 19 points and Wood went on a 13-2 second-quarter run to take complete control of the game. Villa Maria (24-4) beat Scranton, 48-32.

The winner will face the winner of (2-1) Pittston Area and (1-3) Bishop Shanahan in the quarterfin­als Saturday.
