Will C. Wood High girls basketball team beats Armijo

The Will C. Wood High girls basketball team routed Armijo 52-39 on Friday in Monticello Empire League play.

The Wildcats (7-13, 1-1) led 14-3 after a quarter and 22-18 at halftime.

Genesis Hamilton led the Wildcats’ offense with 13 points and Athena Brombacher and Nia Gutierrez both added nine.

Wood plays at Vanden on Wednesday.

Middle school girls basketball Vaca Pena goes 1-2 at Cougar Classic

The Vaca Pena girls basketball team picked up a win Saturday but lost both games Sunday in the 18th annual Cougar Classic tournament in Dixon over the weekend.

The Panthers downed Alice Birney of Sacramento 25-6. Natalia Sanchez led all scorers with a careerhigh 17 points.

Vaca Pena (4-7) fell in the semifinals against host C.A. Jacobs, 2724, despite a last second 3-point attempt. Tianna Palmer led a balanced scoring attack with seven points and nine rebounds, while Sanchez followed with six points and six rebounds and Lucia Alexander adding five points and two steals.

The Panthers dropped to Jepson in the battle for third place, 42-32. Palmer led the offense with 15 points, 11 rebounds and three steals and Sanchez added ten points. Andrea Howard grabbed seven rebounds .

Both Palmer and Sanchez were named to the alltournam­ent team.

Middle school boys basketball Vaca Pena wins event

The Vaca Pena boys basketball team won the 18th annual Cougar Classic tournament over the weekend, defeating top seed Golden West in overtime 62-61.

Vaca Pena was down 30-22 and fought back to take the lead 59-56 with 18 seconds left before Golden West rallied again to tie.

Josiah Jones had 29 points, Jayden HamiltonHo­lland added 14 points and Marcel Longmire chipped in seven.

Josiah Jones and Jemeir Buckner were all-tournament.
