Vanden High handles Wood 65-39 in MEL contest at James Boyd Gymnasium

The Vanden High girls basketball team defeated Will C. Wood on Wednesday night, 65-39 in Monticello Empire League action.

Vanden used a 24-8 second quarter to cruise to a victory.

Joia Armstrong led the way with 16 points for Vanden (16-4, 3-0). Dominique Eaglin had 14, while Jiana Creswell added 12 points.

Genesis Hamilton led Wood in scoring with 16 points and Crystal Carroll added 12.

“I’m really proud of the way we competed against Vanden,” Wood head coach Carly Wudel said. “Our team continues to improve on little aspects of the game and it is making a big difference in our overall performanc­e. We’ll take this game as a learning experience and get ready for the next one on Friday.”

Wood’s overall record is 7-14 and MEL record is 1-2. The Wildcats play against Vacaville High on Friday at Will C. Wood.

VACAVILLE 50, FAIRFIELD 47 >> The Vacaville High girls basketball team defeated Fairfield 50-47 on Wednesday night in Monticello Empire League action.

Vacaville (5-14, 2-1) used and 11-6 third quarter to come away with a win.

Audrey Valenzuela had 19 points for the Bulldogs, while Olivia Shimboff had 12 and Suraya Llyod had nine points.

“It was a tough fought game from both teams,” Vacaville High head coach Brittany Flores said. “We were able to make smart moves in the final minutes which allowed us to come out with the win. Now it’s time to prepare for Wood.”

The Vacaville High girls junior varsity basketball team lost to Fairfield 62-29.

Alicia Delarosby and Suzy Crist each had six points for the Bulldogs. Stephanie Esquivel and Angie Douglas added five points, and Naileah Mora added four points.

Girls Soccer

VANDEN 2, WOOD 1 >> The Vanden High girls soccer team defeated Will C. Wood 2-1 on Wednesday night in Monticello Empire League play.

Wood led 1-0 after the first 10 minutes, but Vanden’s Gisela Torres tied the game up at 1-1 with seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Vanden took the lead with seven minutes remaining in the game when Aaryah Scott scored.

The Vikings improved to 4-7 and 3-0 in the MEL with the win. The Wildcats dropped to 3-8-3 overall and 1-2 in the MEL with the loss.

Wrestling

VACAVILLE GETS WINS OVER VANDEN, RODRIGUEZ >> The Vacaville High wrestling team won its last two dual meets of the Monticello Empire League season, defeating Rodriguez 59-15 and Vanden 72-0

Winning for the Bulldogs (5-0) against Rodriguez was Tyler Riley, Kainoa Medina, Logan Valledor, Casey Roberts, Eric Almarinez, Muhammad Marini, Ethan Birch, John Collet, Francisco Ochoa, Coulter Malone, Eric Hayward and Chris Island.

In the dual against Vanden the Vikings were only able to put one varsity wrestler on the mat.
