Christmas carols and music have been with us, well, since forever. Or nearly forever, as far back as the fifth century, not long after early Christian church leaders created the holy December day.

Many holiday favorites were written in the Middle Ages, but the music of Christmas has evolved and expanded, of course, into the 21st century, to include so many different genres, including jazz, blues, gospel, singularly American idioms.

Be that as it may, the Vallejo Symphony Brass Quintet is getting into the merrymaking spirit with a concert livestreamed Dec. 18 on the symphony’s YouTube channel.

Dubbed “No So Silent Night,” the event begins at 6 p.m. and will hail from the Empress Theatre. The concert is free and will be available for listening and viewing for 48 hours, at https:// www.youtube. com/channel/UC4zgwZcwwsDDGCm57B8B3wg.

The players are Scott Macomber, trumpet; Bruce Chrisp, tenor trombone and quintet spokesman; Tim Carless, bass trombone; Brad Hogarth, trumpet; and Alex Camphouse, horn.

T he scheduled pro - gram: “Carol of the Bells” by Mykola Leontovych, arr. Gary Olson; Christmas Jazz Favorites No. 1, arr. Lennie Niehaus; “Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer” by Johnny Marks, arr. Arthur Frackenpohl; “Sleigh Ride” by Leroy Anderson, arr. Keith Snell; and 12 Christmas carols, arr. Jack Gale.

As for the carols, many of us know them by heart, or nearly so, and the evening promises to offer plenty of opportunities for singalongs to the instrumental music, perhaps while decking the halls and hanging stockings with care.
