Vacaville High subdues Vanden in volleyball

The Vacaville High volleyball team won a key Monticello Empire League matchup on Friday over host Vanden, 25-16, 25-20, 25-21.

“This was a really fun match,” said new Vacaville head coach Ashley Chappell. “We have waited for this day for many months now. To be able to see the girls’ faces without masks and showing emotion was priceless.”

Emma Johnson ran the offense with 56 assists, 23 serves and six aces. Tiana Zamora served well for 11 points and three aces. Christiana Cruz led the team in kills with nine. Sammy Brown played well all the way around with 7 kills,12 digs, and serve-receive passing of a 2.8. Jordyn Moriarty led the defense with 19 digs.

“We got off to a slow start, but made big charges in each set,” said Vanden head coach Cindy Scolavino. “Vacaville served really well.”

Audrey Alexander went 14-for-16 serving with five aces, making a run of 14 serves in a row. Mora Braggs started her serving by serving out twice. She regrouped and went 16-for18 with four aces, bringing the team back from a large Vacaville lead in the third set with 16 serves in a row.

Sammie Carelock led the team with 18 kills.

Vacaville has its home opener against Armijo on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Vanden hosts Fairfield at home on Tuesday.

Junior varsity volleyball Vanden 2, Vacaville 0

The Vikings won in straight sets, 25-20 and 25-23.

Brianna Davis went 7-for-7 serving with an ace. She also had a kill, five digs and eight assists. Jada Cuffie went 12for-12 with two aces and added two kills, a dig and a block. Makenzie Lovell went 6-for-6 with three aces and had 11 digs. Sumerlyn Spencer was 6-for-7, an ace and solid serve-receive, adding six kills, three digs and two blocks.

Boys track and field Vacaville 92, Vanden 33

The Vacaville High boys track team defeated Vanden 92-33 on Wednesday in the inaugural dual meet held at the revamped Tom Zunino Stadium.

Double winners for Vacaville were Logan Cunningham in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles, Anthony Marcus in the shot put and discus, Ryan Scholtes in the 1,600 meters and 800 meteres and Geremiah Brown in the 100 meters and 200 meters.

Vanden got wins from Brayden Chavez in the 400 meters, Robert Breed in the long jump and Gavin Dimick in the pole vault. Other Vacaville winners were Blake Ivovic in the high jump and Paul Hobbs in the 3,200 meters.

Notable marks were the 1,600 meters where Vacaville went 1-2-3 with Ryan Scholtes ( 4:29.70 ), Asher Love ( 4:29.86 ) and freshman Colton Walker (4:30.53 )

Girls track and field Vacaville 104, Vanden 12

Makayla Oliver was a double winner for Vacaville in the 100 and 200 meters. Other Vacaville winners were Norah Courtney in the 1,600, Alicia Rawdon in the 800, Aspin Oliver in the 300-meter hurdles, Jules Meehan in the shot put, Dani Rydjord in the discus, Sydney Boele in the high jump, Lily Holman in the long jump and Hanna Galgan in the pole vault.

Natalya Blitch won the 400 meters for Vanden.

A notable mark was a 14.79 time by Maya Holman in the 100-meter hurdle race.

Vacaville is at home on Monday against Rodriguez and on Wednesday against

Fairfield.

Badminton Vacaville 8, Davis 1

In a non-conference match, the Bulldogs downed the Blue Devils at Vacaville, 8 to 1.

All nine matches were singles, with all of Vacaville’s eight wins coming in straight sets.

Vacaville winners were Katelyn Crismon, Kelly Han, Emily Pehl, Kait Roser, Sierra Higdon, Nia Macay, Stephanie Esquivel and Vicky Li.

Vacaville plays next at Armijo on Tuesday.

Correction

The article in Saturday’s edition on the VandenWood softball game stated that Vanden pitcher Hazyl Gray was the winning pitcher in all four of her team’s Monticello Empire League games this year. In fact, Gray won two of those games and pitcher Keira Cahalan won the other two. The Reporter regrets the error.
