Giants, A’s prospects picked for Futures Game
Marco Luciano and Heliot Ramos of the Giants and Tyler Soderstrom of the A’s have been selected to play in the MLB Futures Game on July 11 at Coors Field in Denver as part of All-Star weekend.
Luciano, 19, is one of six infielders, and Ramos, 21, is one of six outfielders chosen to the National League team. Soderstrom, 19, is one of three catchers on the American League team in a seven-inning game.
Luciano, a native of the Dominican Republic, was signed by the Giants as a 16-year-old in 2018 when he was listed as one of baseball’s top international prospects. So far this season, Luciano, in his third year in the U.S., already has 12 home runs and 36 RBI in 176 at-bats for Low Single-A San Jose.
On Monday, Luciano, a shortstop, had 10 total bases, going 3-for-5 with two home runs, a double and four RBI in a 9-2 San Jose win over Stockton. Luciano is ranked 12th on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 prospects, ahead of catcher Joey Bart (No. 17).
Luciano, who will turn 20 this September, has made no bones about the fact that he wants to win an Opening Day job with the Giants in 2021.
“If I continue doing what I’m doing right now and I have a full regular season under me and I keep doing what I’m doing and showing the team that I’m ready,” Luciano said in March. “I think a year would be my timetable.”
Ramos, the Giants’ first-round draft pick out of Puerto Rico in 2017, is 63rd on MLB Pipeline’s list. So far this season, he’s hitting .236 with 15 RBI in 47 games for Double-A Richmond. In 44 games as an outfielder, Ramos, as of Monday, had yet to make an error this season.
Soderstrom was the A’s first-round pick last year and is hitting .315 with a .974 OPS in 45 games for Stockton this season.
