Vanden boys basketball team wins tight game with Rodriguez

In front of their home crowd on Friday, the Vanden High boys basketball team remained undefeated in Monticello Empire League play, beating Rodriguez, 70-68.

The Vikings (9-10) improved to a 3-0 record in league, and the Mustangs (13-3) dropped to 3-1.

Going into halftime, the Vikings had a four-point lead and then they held on at the end.

Vanden returns to MEL play Sunday as they host the Armijo Royals at home.

Boys soccer Vacaville 2, Vanden 0

On a night where the wind was a major factor, the Vacaville High boys soccer team won in front of their home crowd, defeating the Vanden Vikings, 2-0.

After no one found the back of the net in the first half, junior Nate Beltran scored two separate goals in the second half — both on assists from sophomore Alejandro Verdugo.

“Found a way to win, especially in this weather, and it’s on to the next one,” Bulldogs head coach Tony Bussard said.

The Bulldogs (8-0-2, 5-01) return to MEL playing Wednesday again at home, when they host the Fairfield Falcons.

Wood 5, Fairfield 0

The Will C. Wood High boys soccer team came back from the road victorious in this Monticello Empire League matchup, beating Fairfield 5-0.

With the score 0-0 in the first half, the Wildcats (84-3, 4-1-1) went on a tear in the second half, scoring all five of their goals.

The first three goals of the game came from senior Isaiah Hurtado on two line drives, and taking a penalty kick for Hayden Hawkins. The fourth goal came from senior Matias Muro on a free kick from 30 yards away. The last goal was from junior Garrett Fuller who got the ball past the goalkeeper’s reach.

After a tough match-up against Vacaville earlier in the week in a 2-2 tie, Wildcats head coach Jorge RuizChavez was proud of his team bouncing back.

“I am proud of the boys, sometimes after such an emotionall­y and physically draining game like we had on Wednesday there can be hang over of some sorts,” Ruiz-Chavez said. “Not these boys, it was a great way to start round two of league.”

The Wildcats aim to continue their winning ways when they return on the road in a MEL league match against Rodriguez on Wednesday.

Women’s basketball Solano 72, Napa 61

The Solano College women’s basketball team used a dominant first half on Friday to hold off Napa Valley 72-61 in Bay Valley Conference

play.

The Falcons led 43-21 at halftime and withstood a furious Storm comeback in the second half. Host Napa had a 40-29 second half.

Zaire Brown finished with 21 points and 16 rebounds for Solano (9-7, 4-0). Cherika Rafan had 16 points, four assists and four steals. Rafan had three 3-pointers.

Jaslyn Woods had nine rebounds and eight assists. Janae Jackson had 14 boards and three blocks and Genesis Ernie Hamilton had nine points and three 3-pointers.

Men’s Basketball Napa 87, Solano 77

The Solano College men’s basketball team fell to host Napa 87-77 on Friday in Bay Valley Conference play.

Jonathan Cobbs had 17 points, including four 3-pointers for the Falcons (2-13, 0-4)

Shakir Howard and Ben Trette both had 16 points for the Storm (4-13, 3-3).
