League of Women Voters series to resume in February
Those with an interest in foreign policy decisions and how they can affect the world will have an opportunity to hear various perspectives when the League of Women Voters of Solano County (LWV) brings the Foreign Policy Association’s “Great Decisions” series returns to a virtual format in February.
For the past decade, LWV has partnered with FPA to host viewings of the latter’s “Great Decisions” series, which delves on foreign policy issues both globally and domestically, and spark discussions on the topics presented. In the past, these forums were at the Benicia Public Library, but because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the discussions will be hosted over Zoom for the second year in a row.
Topics for 2022 include worldwide demographic changes, outer space, climate change, the U.S./Russian relationship, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its reaction to the military coup in Myanmar; the “Quad Alliance” between Japan, Australia, India and the U.S; Latin American drug policy, industrial policy and President Joe Biden’s agenda.
“Our foreign policy decisions affect citizens of other nations, and theirs affect us,” LWV officials wrote in a news release. “How we choose to deal with epidemics, use or threat of military force, trade agreements, or environmental issues impacts everyone! It’s a small world: ignorance about events anywhere on the planet (or even out in space!) is dangerous.”
The first meeting will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 7 over Zoom. Subsequent meetings will take place at 7 p.m. the following nine Mondays. Before each meeting, participants will read a chapter on the week’s topic in the “Great Decisions.” available from the Foreign Policy Association for $35 at fpa. org, $24.99 from Kindle or from LWVSC itself for $25, although supplies are limited. Each meeting will begin with a short documentary video on the week’s topic, followed by an informal discussion
