Vaca boys soccer defeats Wood

Vacaville, Vacaville Christian, Vanden boys basketball also claim victories

The Vacaville High boys soccer team won a thriller against Wood on Tuesday night, 2-1.

Wood scored first in the game, going up 1-0 at the half.

The Bulldogs tied the game with a solo goal from league leading goal scorer, senior Nathan Beltran.

The game-winning goal came from junior Alex Verdugo off an assist from sophomore Dylan Gonzalez.

“More of a rough and tough match,” Vacaville head coach Tony Bussard said. “The referee called the game very very tight which made it extremely difficult to get into a rhythm. Outstandin­g defense was led by my senior Max Galeano, sophomores Elijiah Cline, Diego Peralta and senior Harrison Strausser. Great teams find ways to win these games. Super proud of my boys.”

The Will C. Wood girls basketball team had no trouble with Fairfield on Tuesday night as the Wildcats won 61-21.

Leading the way for Wood was Athena Brombacher with 19 points and six rebounds, while Natalia Sanchez had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Lucia Alexander had nine points and six assists, while Andrea Howard had seven points and three steals.

Wood improved to 10-7 and 4-1 in the Monticello Empire League.

WOOD 61, FAIRFIELD 21 >> Boys basketball FAIRFIELD 54, WOOD 52 >>

The Will C. Wood boys basketball team lost a heartbreak­er to Fairfield 54-52 on Tuesday night.

Fairfield led by nine points after the first quarter, but a 19-8 run by Wood in the second quarter gave the Wildcats a 30-28 halftime lead.

Fairfield outscored Wood 15-11 in the third quarter and the Falcons held on for the victory.

“We started off slow and got down 16-2 in the first few minutes but came back it was close the whole way,” Wood head coach Mark Wudel said. “Nicko Ignacio got an offensive rebound and put back in a shot with six seconds left in the game to seal it.”

Isiah Dixon led Wood with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Cory Edwards and Josiah Chavez added eight points each. Noah Bergman added six rebounds.

Nicko Ignacio led Fairfield with 18 points and Amari Bryant added 12 points.

VACAVILLE 52, RODRIGUEZ 48 >> The Vacaville High boys basketball team defeated Rodriguez 52-48 on Tuesday night.

Nathan Schnell led the Bulldogs with 17 points, while Larry Lewis III had 12 points.

The Bulldogs improved to 17-5 and 5-0 in the Monticello Empire League with the win.

VACAVILLE CHRISTIAN 68, SAN JUAN 35 >>

The Vacaville Christian boys basketball team defeated San Juan 6835 on Tuesday night.

Leading the way for the Falcons was Garrett Kuch, who had 14 points and nine rebounds to go with seven assists. Landen Graves also had 14 points, while Thomas Lane had 13 points and three steals. Brian Laxamana contribute­d with 10 points.

The Falcons improved to 16-3 and 6-0 in the Sierra Delta League with the victory.

VANDEN 75, ARMIJO 36 >> The Vanden High boys basketball team defeated Armijo 75-36 on Tuesday night.

The Vikings got off to a quick start, leading 24-8 after the first quarter.

With the win Vanden is now 15-8 and 4-1 in the Monticello Empire League.
