League of Women Voters to hold annual meeting June 1
League of Women Voters Solano County will hold its annual meeting June 1 at the Solano Community Health Hub in Solano Town Center in Fairfield.
The gathering gets underway at 6 p.m. at the mall, 1451 Gateway Blvd. Its focus will be pending plans to continue the work of championing democracy in Solano County as well as sharing information about its current work.
That includes a special presentation on “Democracy Matters, LWVSC Civics Education Program,” said KC Nash, a media contact for the league.
Notably, the program received the Making Democracy Work Award at the California League convention Saturday in San Francisco, an honor that “recognizes successful local league programs that educate, register and engage participation of young voters and future voters in government process,” she added in a prepared statement.
Program creator Alice Fried and LWVSC board members accepted the statewide award.
Other awards presented at the convention, noted Nash, were the Leaning into League Possibilities Award given to the San Francisco League for its youth voter registration program; and the Leaning into League Power Award presented to the San Luis Obispo County League for its issue-advocacy program centered around gerrymandering.
During the annual meeting, a Democracy Matters presentation will showcase the LWVSC partnership with the Solano Youth Coalition, formed “to educate and engage Solano youth in local government using hands-on civics learning activities,” Nash wrote in the statement.
In addition to Fried, featured guest speakers will be Rebecca Floyd, Johanna Nowak-Palmer and a panel of participating SYC students.
Nash said the June 1 meeting will be “a hybrid event,” in-person at the Solano Community Health Hub (entrance is at the northeast corner of the mall near H&M); and online with a Zoom link, at the League website and at https://tinyurl. com/yshakf3s.
