Annual polar plunge to benefit Make- A- Wish
T his weekend, some daring folks will be “freezin’ for a reason”— all to benefit kids.
The eighth annual Polar Plunge, hosted by the Mad Batters Softball Team, part of the Moms for Make- A- Wish softball league, will be held at 1 p. m. Saturday at Deer Lake& West Brunswick Fire Company No. 1, 1 Ash Road, Deer Lake. The degree- dropping dip will be followed by an after- party at 6 p. m. at Goodfellas, Pottsville, with music by Sapphire starting at 7.
“All proceeds go directly to Make- AWish. Every $ 4,400 raised grants awish, andwe try to keep them all local in our community,” said Becky Philyaw, cocaptain for the Mad Batters. “You’re going to get out there, have a good time, get in the water and freeze your tail off, but it’s for a good cause.”
And a good cause is always a unifying force.
“It’s morale- building, it’s communitybuilding, and it brings a lot of people from different walks together for a common reason: to raise money for the kids,” Philyaw said, adding praise to all the community sponsors who get behind the event to really make it happen.
Registration begins at 11 a. m., “and you can also come in and check out the basket raffles aswell,” Philyaw said about the 50/ 50 raffle and basket of cheer raffle, which is for adults only. “It’s loaded with alcohol and lottery tickets.
“At the polar plunge itself, we have close to a hundred items to be raffled off, and that doesn’t include our large items. We have some larger gift items like jewelry, a piece of handmade furniture, a couple jars of 4Play Moonshine, all that good stuff.”
The cost to sign up is $ 35 the day of the event, $ 30 for advance registrants and $ 25 for students. There are also special rates available for groups of five or more. Long sleeve T- shirts are included with signups and depict a polar bear, and on the back, the event’s sponsors. Advance registration is available at The Cake Pros, as are basket of cheer tickets, which are $ 2, aswell as tickets for the after- party at Goodfellas, at $ 15 a pop. Advance tickets for plungers are also available by calling Philyaw at 570516- 4405, Jamie at 570- 292- 6225 or Jackie at 570- 527- 6759.
As you might have expected froma main sponsor, there will be lots of desserts from The Cake Pros, in addition to fare such as cheeseburgers, hot dogs, lots of homemade soups and chowders, pierogies, coffee and hot chocolate.
Despite ever- changing weather reports, jumpers should prepare for the spine- chilling H2O.
“That water is freezing cold,” Philyaw said. “I’ve done it every year for six years, and I amnot looking forward to it now any more than I was then.”
And this year, she said she’s planning, in honor of the Winter Olympics, to go as one of its rings.
“We always have superheroes. We always have speedos. We just ask that it’s rated G for children.”
