RSVP of Schuylkill County seeks helpers ages 55 and over.

Schuylkill County is fortunate to have a large number of senior residents who call it home. Our elder adults are spry and active and you’d be hard- pressed to find a local nonprofit that isn’t enriched by an older volunteer.

In the past 34 years, RSVP of Schuylkill County volunteers donated more than 1.5 million hours of service to Schuylkill County.

RSVP is unique in that it enrolls only volunteers over the age of 55 who are placed to serve with agencies on an ongoing basis. They do not just volunteer one time, but become part of the culture of the agency where they serve, helping to meet the goals established by that agency. Many RSVP volunteers have served with agencies for 15 or more years with several volunteering at their agency for more than 25 years.

Today, almost 350 volunteers generously give their time, talents and skills to help improve the quality of life in the county.

RSVP volunteers contribute their time and talents in a variety of ways, including with the American Red Cross, Servants to All helping the homeless, hospitals, libraries, historical societies and museums, schools and daycares, food banks, nursing homes and by tutoring or sharing their talents of knitting, crochet- ing, sewing and weaving.

However, at this time, volunteers are especially needed for ways that assist seniors in our community, such as driving seniors to medical appointments and errands, packing meals for or delivering Meals on Wheels, Operation Reach Out phone callers, answering the hotline at the APPRISE telecenter assisting seniors with insurance decisions and the Ombudsmen Program acting as an advocate for residents of long term care facilities.

If you’d like to volunteer for any of the RSVP opportunities, call Darla at 570- 6223103.
