Shawmont student earns top honors
ROXBOROUGH >> A Shawmont School seventh-grader recently took home top honors in a regional science fair.
Cierra Lyles competed at the George Washington Carver Science Fair March 5 at Temple University. The awards ceremony took place March 13 at the Academy of Natural Sciences.
Competing against sevenththrough 12th-grade students from public, parochial, private and charter schools throughout the region, Cierra placed first among seventh- and eighth-graders for environmental science. Additionally, she won two special category awards, which students in all grade levels competed for — the Naval Science Award for Environmental Science and the PECO Excellence Engineering Award.
Cierra began work on her project independently and then worked alongside her teacher, Charlene Jablow, on the official entry requirements.
She is no stranger to citywide competition, having won awards in the George Washington Carver Science Fair’s fourth- through sixth-grade competition in years past.
