MANAYUNK » This one has gone to the dogs!

The Manayunk Development Corp. is bringing a brand-new event to celebrate four-legged friends this August.

Dog Day of Summer will be held Sunday, Aug. 26, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day will bring pet-friendly vendors, activities, pet adoptions, food vendors and more to the Venice Island Amphitheater, 7 Lock St., Manayunk.

“Manayunk is super petfriendly — with our neighborhood dog park, our many options for outdoor dining and even a bakery just for dogs and cats,” said Megan Douress, Manayunk Development Corp.’s director of marketing nd events. “We thought it was about time we celebrate our fourlegged residents here in Manayunk, and what better day to do

it than Aug. 26, the National Day of the Dog?”

Many of Manayunk’s businesses will be participating in the event, including Pet Friendly Dog Bakery, City of Paws Pet Care, Scallywags Dog Daycare, Regal Beagle, Manayunk Pooch Scoochers & Co. and Walk This Way Dog Walking and Pet Sitting. Other local businesses include the Wissahickon Creek Veterinary Hospital in Roxborough, Opportunity Barks in East Falls and Piggyback Treats. Many of the event participants will be selling pet-friendly goodies or hosting activities, such as pawdicures and a kissing booth.

Other pet-friendly activities at Dog Day of Summer will include a photo booth with Alexa Nahas Photography and a “beer chugging” contest, where canine participants will compete against each other to see who can down a bowl of chicken broth the fastest. In addition, Tito’s Vodka will sponsor a weekendlong “yappy hour” at participating restaurants, where a portion of drink proceeds will go to the beneficiary.

And what’s a pet-centric event without pet adoptions? Local rescues Brandywine Valley SPCA, Saved Me Animal Rescue, Salfid Rescue Inc. and Home at Last Dog Rescue will be on hand with pets ready to find their permanent homes.

Not only will the event serve as a day of fun for our furry friends, but it will raise money for the Philadelphia Chapter of the National Canine Cancer Foundation, which will also have a presence at the event. The mission of the foundation is to eliminate cancer in dogs through education, outreach and research.

“It’s going to be a really fun day for both pets and their owners,” Douress said. “We invite everyone to come to the event, even families who don’t have a dog. Who knows, they may end up going home with one!”

The Manayunk Development Corp. will present Dog Day of Summer Sunday, Aug. 26.
