FOW to hold cleanup effort

The Review - - FRONT PAGE - A press release from Friends of the Wissahickon

ANDORRA » For more than a century, Wissahickon Valley Park’s 1,800 acres of green space has been an oasis for Philadelphians. But all public lands, especially one as popular as the Wissahickon, which welcomed 1.3 million visits last year, need volunteers to help keep them safe and beautiful.

In recognition of National Public Lands day, join Friends of the Wissahickon (FOW) Saturday, Sept. 29, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Andorra Meadow to help with trail restoration, drainage improvements and tread stabilization.

Volunteers should meet at the upper Andorra parking lot on Northwestern Avenue off Ridge Ave. Parking is limited, so consider parking near Northwestern Stables on the Chestnut Hill side and then walking up the road past the Wissahickon Environmental Center Tree House.

The event is open to the public. Registration is recommended in case of cancellation. The event will be canceled in the event of heavy rain, thunder

and lighting, high winds, etc.

Visit FOW’s Facebook page for updates. Cancelations will be posted by 8 a.m. on the day of the event.

“I’m always amazed and gratified by the large turnout we get at these ‘Super Saturday’ cleanup events,” said Maura McCarthy, FOW executive director. “Not only is it a great way to meet new people who share a love of the Wissahickon, but the additional help really makes a difference to our ongoing efforts to keep the park wellgroomed for everyone’s enjoyment.”
