• On July 14, 1099, dur­ing the First Cru­sade, Chris­tian knights from Europe cap­ture Jerusalem af­ter seven weeks of siege and be­gin mas­sacring the city’s Mus­lim and Jew­ish pop­u­la­tion.

• On July 11, 1656, Ann Austin and Mary Fisher, two English­women, be­come the first Quak­ers to im­mi­grate to the Mas­sachusetts Bay Colony. Their lib­eral teach­ings en­raged the Pu­ri­tan colo­nial gov­ern­ment and they were ar­rested and jailed. Af­ter five years in prison, they were de­ported.

• On July 12, 1862, Pres­i­dent Abra­ham Lin­coln signs into law a mea­sure calling for the award­ing of a U.S. Army Medal of Honor. The pre­vi­ous De­cem­ber, Lin­coln had ap­proved a pro­vi­sion cre­at­ing a U.S. Navy Medal of Valor. To date more than 3,400 men and one woman have re­ceived the Medal of Honor.

• On July 8, 1951, Paris, the cap­i­tal city of France, cel­e­brates turn­ing 2,000 years old. How­ever, the City of Lights was most likely founded around 250 B.C., when a Gal­lic tribe known as the Parisii set­tled an is­land (Ile de la Cite) in the Seine River, which runs through present-day Paris.

• On July 9, 1962, Bob Dy­lan records “Blowin’ in the Wind,” although it wouldn’t be re­leased for an­other year. The most well-known ver­sion was done by Pe­ter, Paul and Mary, which be­came a hit.

• On July 10, 1985, in Auck­land har­bor in New Zealand, Green­peace’s Rain­bow Warrior sinks af­ter French agents in div­ing gear plant a bomb on the ship’s hull. Although French au­thor­i­ties de­nied re­spon­si­bil­ity, a British news­pa­per later un­cov­ered ev­i­dence of French Pres­i­dent Fran­cois Mit­ter­rand’s au­tho­riza­tion of the bomb­ing plan.

• On July 13, 1990, the ro­man­tic-thriller “Ghost” opens in the­aters. The film, about a woman who com­mu­ni­cates with her mur­dered hus­band through a sassy psy­chic, was a box-of­fice hit and re­ceived mul­ti­ple Academy Award nom­i­na­tions.
