Teacher to be featured on ‘Mission Unstoppable’
Lisa Moe, a fourth-grade teacher at Butterfield Ranch Elementary School in Chino Hills, will be featured on an episode of “Mission Unstoppable,” airing 9 a.m. Saturday on KCBS-TV.
On the show, Moe shares how she is able to tap into her students’ confidence, strength and natural leadership abilities through STEM learning and help rid them of preconceived beliefs that they are not good at math or science, according to a news release.
She believes all her students can embrace and excel in STEM; they just need a safe space and fertile environment to unlock their ideas and imagination.
She teaches her students how to develop projects using a “Yes, I can” mindset, with the goal of creating something that will help others and contribute to a positive change in the world. The results have generated everything from a homemade Roomba-type vacuum cleaner for the classroom to pick up pencil shavings to a plush dog robot that helps kids get to sleep.
On the show with Moe are three of her former fourthgraders, Fiona Bi, Kassidy Douglass and Chris Chavez, who are now in the fifth grade at Butterfield Ranch Elementary.
Moe decided to pursue a career in elementary education after she was inspired by a fifth-grade teacher when she was growing up in Corona. She received her Master of Arts in teaching degree from UC Irvine and a Master of Science in educational technology from Cal State Fullerton.
Moe uses technology to get her students excited about learning, and a key resource for her remote instruction during the pandemic was the Infosys USA Pathfinders portal online community for teachers.
Using the portal, Moe was able to find classes and tutorials that gave her the tools to create project assignments for her students such as developing Stem-oriented ways to study the history of the California missions.
“When we had to completely transition to online learning, I made it my mission to teach my students that they can still have confidence and be amazing learners, even on a computer,” Moe said in the news release.
“Mission Unstoppable,” hosted by Miranda Cosgrove, spotlights female science, tech, engineering and math professionals. The show, produced by Hearst Media Production Group and Lyda Hill Philanthropies’ IF/THEN Initiative, is part of CBS’S Dream Team Educational/informational programming block.
