Author of kids’ book about Rosa Park to sign copies

-

The Folk Music Center in Claremont will host a book signing with Angela Sadler Williamson, a cousin of civil rights activist Rosa Parks and author of “My Life with Rosie: A Bond Between Cousins,” 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Feb. 26.

The Claremont Public Library Committee and the Folk Music Center are cosponsoring the event.

Mothering magazine voted “My Life with Rosie: A Bond Between Cousins” the best children’s book on Black history, according to a news release.

Williamson shares a different side of Rosa Parks, known to the Williamson family. Known by the family as Cousin Rosie, Rosa Parks spent most of her adult life living in Detroit after leaving Montgomery, Ala., in 1957. Parks formed many relationships with young people, especially Carolyn Williamson Green, her young cousin.

The book helps continue Rosa Parks’ legacy and philosophy on activism by teaching young readers how to become change agents in their community, according to the news release.

“The Folk Music Center is proud to present, in person, Dr. Williamson, for a book signing event to celebrate Black History Month,” Ellen Harper, owner of the Folk Music Center, in the news release.

Harper and Williamson met last year during a filming of “Everybody with Angela Williamson,” Williamson’s weekly interview show on KLCS-PBS.

“I was extremely fortunate to have been invited to be a guest on the 2021 fall season,” Harper said in the news release.

“In addition to being a successful television host with a stellar roster of guests, Dr. Williamson is also an associate professor at Rio Hondo Community College and Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker. We are honored to have her present her awardwinning book at the Folk Music Center,” Harper said.

During the event, Williamson will read from her book beginning at 11:30 a.m.

The Folk Music Center is at 220 N. Yale Ave.
