DOWN THE STRETCH

• Trainer John Sadler told the Thoroughbred Daily News this week that Flightline, sidelined indefinitely by a strained hock in his right hind leg, could resurface in the Grade I Churchill Downs Stakes at 7 furlongs on Kentucky Derby Day (May 7). Sadler said the one-turn Met Mile at Belmont Park on June 11 is also still on the radar, as is the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 5. Sadler told the Daily Racing Form in December that Flightline’s camp is planning to race the Tapit colt four times in 2022.

Spirit will be named the official winner of last spring’s Kentucky Derby, met with Churchill Downs stewards Monday and should hear soon if his record seventh Derby victory will stand. Baffert is currently banned from running horses in this year’s and next year’s Derby because Medina Spirit tested positive for a banned substance after the race. • Ce Ce finished second in her 6-year-old debut Feb. 5 in the Santa Monica Stakes at Santa Anita, but that didn’t take away from the joy trainer Michael Mccarthy felt five days later when the daughter of Elusive Quality won the Eclipse Award for top female sprinter of 2021. “I’m just so happy she got the credit she rightfully deserved,” Mccarthy told Ed Golden of Santa Anita. “Ce Ce’s been very good for two years, and I think she proved that to a lot of people at the awards ceremony.”
