Twins' Sanó slated for surgery on left knee

-

Minnesota Twins infielder Miguel Sanó will undergo surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his left knee and there’s no timeframe for his return, manager Rocco Baldelli said Tuesday.

Sanó was placed on the 10day injured list Monday. He sustained the injury on April 26 while celebrating Minnesota’s 5-4 victory over the Tigers, a game decided on the final play.

Sanó returned to play Saturday but left early because of knee pain.

It’s been a difficult season for the 28-year-old Sanó, who’s batting .093 (5 for 54) with one home run. Making matters worse was that he’s going to miss time after sustaining an injury during a postgame celebration.

“There’s no way to talk about (the injury) without mentioning that,” Baldelli said. “Frankly, dwelling on that doesn’t accomplish much. The guy just wants to get (the surgery) done as quickly as possible so he can get back on the field.”

Sano broke into the majors with the Twins in 2015. He hit 34 home runs in 2019 and 30 last season.

BLUE JAYS RELEASE FOWLER » The Toronto Blue Jays are granting outfielder Dexter Fowler’s request to be released.

The Blue Jays signed the 36-year-old veteran to a minor league deal on March 31 and he appeared in three games at Triple-a Buffalo, batting .417 (5 for 12) with three RBIS.

He has not played in the majors since tearing his left ACL in a game with the Angels on April 9, 2021.

In 14 MLB seasons, Fowler has appeared in 1,460 games, collecting 1,306 hits, 127 homers and 517 RBIS. A lifetime .259 hitter, he was an All-star with the Cubs in 2016, winning the World Series in the second of his two seasons in Chicago.

Fowler also has played for the Colorado Rockies (2008-13), Houston Astros (2014) and St. Louis Cardinals (2017-20).
