Roosevelt wins title in the final race
Orange Vista junior Kailah Mckenzie had just as successful of a day, placing in the top two in three events. She won a section championship in the Division 1 girls 100 hurdles, squeaking out a victory over Upland sophomore London Davis in a personal-best 14.20; Davis ran 14.22. The Inland area, in fact, swept the top four spots in the event, as King junior Sarah Ajayi (14.93) was third and Santiago sophomore Samantha Walsten (15.08) was fourth.
Mckenzie was runner-up to Hope in the long jump at 19-7.
Her second-place showing in the high jump at 5-6 was the mark that made her the proudest Saturday. She is slated to try and qualify for the CIF State Championship meet at next week’s Masters meet, also at Moorpark.
“I think I’m going to have a lot of confidence because I’m used to the competition now,” Mckenzie said.
Division 1, in fact, was a particular strong point for the Inland area. Of the 32 combined events for boys and girls, 18 were won by Inland athletes.
That includes a third individual title for Upland, won by senior Christopher Coates in the 400 (47.82).
Murrieta Mesa senior Cade Moran, who last month set a new Riverside County record in the discus at 207-4, won again Saturday with a mark of 201-4. He paced strong Inland finishes in both throws, as Elsinore’s duo of Elijah Ignacio (1824) and Matthew Hodges (170-5) were third and fourth in the discus. Great Oak senior Aiden Pastorian won the shot put at 66-7 with Moran the runner-up at 63-0.
On the girls side, Chino Hills senior Erica Collins won the Division 1 shot put in 40-6. Roosevelt senior Karyssa Owens topped the Division 1 discus in 130-5.
Cajon senior Seth Johnson won the Division 1 boys high jump in 6-6. The Cowboys also won the 400 relay in 41.80, and the boys finished fourth as a team with 43 points.
And in the Division 1 pole vaults, Inland athletes went deep into the night to claim their titles, as Roosevelt senior Hunter O’brien won for the boys in 15-9.
Vista Murrieta sophomore Aspen Fears was the only female to clear 12-6 and won after just missing her attempts at 13-0.
