DAR invites students to enter essay contests
The Luiseño Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution invites Temecula-area students to enter the DAR’S essay contests.
The contests, one for students in fifth through eighth grades and another for high school students, are open to students in public, private and parochial schools and to home-schooled students.
Winners in the local contest will receive awards and their essays will be forwarded to the state level, according to a news release.
The winner at the national level will receive a certificate, pin and monetary award at the DAR’S 2023 Continental Congress in Washington, D.C.
“Patriots of the American Revolution” is the essay topic of the contest for students in ninth through 12th grade.
Essay writers select a figure from the era of the American Revolution (1773-1783) and discuss how he or she influenced the course of the American Revolution, who he or she was and what his or her contribution was to the founding of the new nation. Figures may be any person, wellknown or not, who supported the American Revolution in any way.
“Delegate to Second Continental Congress” is the topic for students in fifth through eighth grade. The Second Continental Congress met from May 10, 1775, to March 1, 1781, included delegates from all 13 colonies and was instrumental in shaping what was to become the United States.
Essay writers are asked to imagine they are delegates in 1775-76 and to write about which colonies they are from and what it will be important for them to accomplish for their colonies.
For complete requirements, students and teachers may contact Anna Anderson, regent of the DAR Luiseño Chapter, by emailing anna.anderson@luiseno.californiadar.org or aandersondar@ gmail.com.
Entry deadline for both contests is Nov. 7.
The DAR Luiseño Chapter is based in Temecula Valley. Members are descendants of patriots of the American Revolutionary War.
