Jones gives a spark to UCLA women in road win over Cal
Freshman Londynn Jones came off the bench to give the No. 16 UCLA women’s basketball team an offensive jolt, hitting 3 of 4 shots from behind the 3-point arc and finishing with 19 points to lead the visiting Bruins to a 67-54 victory over California on Friday night.
UCLA set the tone for the game on the boards, out-rebounding Cal 4828 and pulling down 20 caroms off the offensive glass, and it helped the Bruins to a 15-point lead at intermission, 35-20.
The Golden Bears got the deficit into single digits briefly early in the third quarter after a Karisma Ortiz jumper made it 42-33, but Emily Bessoir answered with a jumper and Gina Conti hit a 3 to get the Bruins back into a double-digit lead they maintained the rest of the way.
Jones, out of Corona Centennial High, hit 7-of12 shots from the field and was 2 of 2 from the line for UCLA (21-6, 10-5 Pac12). Charisma Osborne posted a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Bessoir had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Jayda Curry finished with 15 points to lead Cal (12-14, 3-12).
NO. 18 ARIZONA 82, NO. 4 UTAH 72 >> Shaina Pellington made 11 straight shots on her way to a career-high 35 points, leading the host Wildcats over the Utes.
Cate Reese added 16 points for Arizona (20-6, 10-5 Pac-12).
The Wildcats broke Utah’s seven-game winning streak and avenged an 8079 loss in Salt Lake City a month ago.
Allison Pili scored 26 points and Jenna Johnson had 19 for the Utes (22-3, 12-3), who entered with the highest ranking in program history.
Pellington had 23 points in the first half when she made all 10 field-goal tries. She made her first shot in the second half before missing.
Pellington finished 13 of 18 with eight rebounds and five steals.
NO. 21 COLORADO 70, ARIZONA STATE 62 >> Quay Miller had 17 points, 10 rebounds and four steals, Tameiya Sadler added 16 points and the visiting Buffaloes beat the Sun Devils.
Miller scored 15 points in the first half to help Colorado (21-5, 12-3 Pac-12) build a 42-31 lead. Miller made 7 of 9 shots in the first half and the Buffaloes shot 59%. Colorado cooled off in the third quarter, scoring just 11 points, but finished the game shooting 49%.
Tyi Skinner scored 27 points, reaching 20-plus for the 13th time this season, for Arizona State (7-17, 0-15).
Men
RICHMOND COACH SET FOR HEART SURGERY >> Richmond coach Chris Mooney said he is stepping away from the Spiders for the remainder of the season to undergo heart surgery.
Mooney, 50, said the procedure will be performed next week at the University of Virginia Medical Center to remove an aneurysm in his ascending aorta. Recovery is expected to take four to eight weeks.
A problem was first detected during a routine physical about a month ago, Mooney said at a news conference, and doctors were able to pinpoint the aneurysm during subsequent testing.
Assistant coach Peter Thomas will guide the Spiders (13-14) for their final four regular-season games.
Mooney is in his 18th season as coach of the Spiders, during which time he became their career victories leader with a 367-297 record.
He signed a three-year extension in June after guiding the Spiders to four straight victories in the Atlantic-10 Tournament — the last three against the top three seeds in succession — and an upset over Big Ten champion Iowa in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
