Pitching, power lead Brewers over Reds

Freddy Peralta pitched six scoreless innings and matched a career high with 13 strikeouts, Tyrone Taylor hit a two-run homer in the seventh and the Milwaukee Brewers blanked the visiting Cincinnati Reds 3-0 on Wednesday.

The Brewers (57-46) took two of three games in the series and extended their lead in the NL Central to 11/2 games over the Reds (56-48). This marked the final matchup of the season between the teams, with Milwaukee winning the season series 10-3.

Peralta gave up four hits and didn’t walk a batter.

Elvis Peguero, Joel Payamps and Devin Williams combined for five more strikeouts and completed the shutout. Peguero (2-3) got the win while Williams retired the side in order in the ninth for his 26th save. CARDINALS 11, DIAMONDBAC­KS 7 >> Nolan Gorman hit two of St. Louis’ five home runs in a road victory over Arizona.

Gorman connected leading off the second inning against All-star starter Zac Gallen, then hit a two-run blast to dead center in the eighth off Scott Mcgough.

Lars Nootbaar, Paul Goldschmid­t and Andrew Knizner also homered to give the Cardinals the series win over the slumping Diamondbac­ks, who have lost six of seven and are 3-9 since the All-star break.

Gallen (11-5) lost for the first time at home in 11 starts this season. He pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing five runs, seven hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. MARLINS 7, RAYS 1 >> Sandy Alcántara threw a five-hit complete game and Miami stopped a 10-game road losing streak by beating Tampa Bay.

Alcántara (4-9), the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner, struck out seven and walked one in his second complete game this season. He had been 0-3 in four July starts.

Rays starter Zach Eflin (11-6), bidding to become the AL’S first 12-game winner, left after four innings with left knee discomfort. He allowed five runs and seven hits.

The Marlins are 2-9 since the All-star break, while Tampa Bay is an Alworst 5-15 in July.

RED SOX 5, BRAVES 3 >> Justin Turner hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the seventh and Boston beat major league-leading Atlanta to sweep the two-game series at Fenway Park.

Rafael Devers, Tristan Casas and Adam Duvall homered for Boston, which trailed 3-0 after Ozzie Albies hit a three-run shot for Atlanta in the sixth.

Boston has won four straight and is a seasonbest eight games over .500. RANGERS 13, ASTROS 5 >> Adolis García’s grand slam to highlighte­d a seven-run fifth and AL West-leading Texas slugged four homers in a win over host Houston.

Marcus Semien, Nathaniel Lowe and Sam Huff also homered for Texas, which avoided a threegame sweep and held on to its two-game lead over the Astros in the division.

The Astros’ Framber Valdez (8-7) allowed six runs on eight hits in a season-low 3 2/3 innings. PHILLIES 6, ORIOLES 4 >> Edmundo Sosa hit a tiebreakin­g solo homer in the seventh and Philadelph­ia beat visiting Baltimore.

Adley Rutschman hit a three-run homer for the Orioles, who maintain a 11/2-game lead over the Rays in the AL East.
