Los Angeles Reed Quintet will present concert at Cal State San Bernardino
The San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra will present a concert by the Los Angeles Reed Quintet at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Cal State San Bernardino Recital Hall.
The San Bernardino Symphony’s music director and conductor, bassoonist Anthony Parnther, is a member of the quintet, which was founded in 2019.
“We founded a special group where reed instruments come together and perform original works as well as arrangements of other existing classical music,” Parnther said in a news release. “There is a very special sonic blend when you combine the sounds of my bassoon orchestra with Claire’s oboe and English horn, Pat’s various saxophones, Don’s clarinet and Brian’s bass clarinet.”
The quintet’s San Bernardino performance is part of the San Bernardino Symphony’s chamber series, and the program will include music by Felix Mendelssohn, Gustav Mahler, Arcangelo Corelli, Gyorgy Ligeti, Yanjun Hua, Fred Coots and Sam Lewis, according to the news release.
The other members of the quintet are saxophonist Patrick Posey, oboist Claire Brazeau, clarinetist Don Foster and bass clarinetist Brian Walsh.
Patrick Posey is a founding member of the New York Citybased contemporary collective Le Train Bleu and performs with the San Bernardino Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the San Francisco Symphony.
Brazeau is the principal oboist of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and also performs with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Musica Angelica and Wildup. She has also recorded for several film and TV soundtracks.
Foster is principal clarinetist of the Pasadena Symphony and second clarinet of the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra and has just begun his 26th season as the Santa Barbara Symphony’s principal clarinetist.
He is a professor of music at Riverside City College and has been featured on many TV and movie soundtracks.
Walsh, who specializes in contemporary classical music, jazz and world music, has performed with groups, including the Brad Dutz Quartet, Brightwork New Music and his own group, the Walsh Set Trio.
Tickets for the concert are $20-$100, and available at sanbernardinosymphony.org or 909-381-5388.
The Cal State San Bernardino Recital Hall is in the Performing Arts Building north of the public parking area on the university campus, 5500 University Parkway, San Bernardino.
