NCAA re­ports tar­get­ing penal­ties re­main same

The NCAA says the num­ber of en­forced tar­get­ing penal­ties in the Foot­ball Bowl Sub­di­vi­sion this sea­son was the same as in 2017, end­ing four straight years of in­creased calls.

NCAA na­tional co­or­di­na­tor of of­fi­cials Rogers Red­ding re­ported 179 en­forced calls in 817 games com­pared with 179 in 816 games last sea­son.


UCF: Coach Josh He­u­pel de­fied ex­pec­ta­tions af­ter re­plac­ing Scott Frost this sea­son and was re­warded for help­ing the Knights post a 12-0 record and win an Amer­i­can Ath­letic Con­fer­ence ti­tle dur­ing his first sea­son, ink­ing a con­tract ex­ten­sion. He­u­pel’s new deal with the Knights runs through Jan. 15, 2024. Fi­nan­cial terms of agree­ment were not im­me­di­ately re­leased Fri­day.

Geor­gia Tech: Geor­gia Tech hired Tem­ple coach Ge­off Collins, choos­ing a Geor­gia na­tive with a back­ground in de­fense to re­place Paul John­son as the Yel­low Jack­ets coach. Collins, 47, is a for­mer Florida and Mis­sis­sippi State de­fen­sive co­or­di­na­tor and Geor­gia Tech as­sis­tant who was 15-10 in two sea­sons at Tem­ple. Lib­erty: Hugh Freeze was in­tro­duced as coach. The job gives Freeze a se­cond chance af­ter his volatile five-year run at Ole Miss ended in NCAA vi­o­la­tions and scan­dal in 2017.

East Carolina: New coach Mike Hous­ton is bring­ing eight of his coaches from James Madi­son to the Pi­rates’ staff. Among the five of­fen­sive coaches and three de­fen­sive coaches are com­ing from James Madi­son are of­fen­sive co­or­di­na­tor Don­nie Kirk­patrick and of­fen­sive line coach Steve Shankweiler, both of whom have pre­vi­ously coached at East Carolina.
