NCAA reports targeting penalties remain same
The NCAA says the number of enforced targeting penalties in the Football Bowl Subdivision this season was the same as in 2017, ending four straight years of increased calls.
NCAA national coordinator of officials Rogers Redding reported 179 enforced calls in 817 games compared with 179 in 816 games last season.
UCF: Coach Josh Heupel defied expectations after replacing Scott Frost this season and was rewarded for helping the Knights post a 12-0 record and win an American Athletic Conference title during his first season, inking a contract extension. Heupel’s new deal with the Knights runs through Jan. 15, 2024. Financial terms of agreement were not immediately released Friday.
Georgia Tech: Georgia Tech hired Temple coach Geoff Collins, choosing a Georgia native with a background in defense to replace Paul Johnson as the Yellow Jackets coach. Collins, 47, is a former Florida and Mississippi State defensive coordinator and Georgia Tech assistant who was 15-10 in two seasons at Temple. Liberty: Hugh Freeze was introduced as coach. The job gives Freeze a second chance after his volatile five-year run at Ole Miss ended in NCAA violations and scandal in 2017.
East Carolina: New coach Mike Houston is bringing eight of his coaches from James Madison to the Pirates’ staff. Among the five offensive coaches and three defensive coaches are coming from James Madison are offensive coordinator Donnie Kirkpatrick and offensive line coach Steve Shankweiler, both of whom have previously coached at East Carolina.
