Burnt Hills grad Hannah Martin invited to World Judo Masters

BURNT HILLS — Burnt Hills graduate Hannah Martin (24) made the cut and was invited to compete in the prestigiou­s fourth annual World Judo Masters event May 24-25 in Tyumen, Russia.

Martin who trains at the Glenville based Jason Morr is Judo Cent e r (JMJC), became the first woman from the JMJC to reach the world masters, which invites only the top 16 athletes in each weight class. Burnt Hills graduate Nick Delpopolo ( 24) was the first JMJC male athlete to make this event as he competed in 2012.

There will be 220 participan­ts from 45 countries at the event with the competitio­n being held at the Palace of Sport in Tyumen. The total prize money is $ 200,000 with $ 6,000 going to the gold medalist, $4,000 for silver and $2,000 for bronze.

Martin, who competes in 63kg, has moved up more than 90 spots on the Internatio­nal Judo Federation's (IJF) World Ranking List (WRL) the last two years and currently sits at No. 16 with 496 points.

“This has been one of my goals since I moved up to 63kg a couple of years ago,” Martin said.

Martin who is currently ranked No. 1 in the United States, has accomplish­ed a lot already this year, taking a silver medal in the Uruguay World Cup, bronze in the Argentina World Cup in addition to winning her second straight national title. Martin continues to strive for making the 2016 Olympic team.

“The world masters has been a fantastic addition to the IJF world tour,” said Martin's coach and fourtime Olympian Jason Morris. “We are very proud of Hannah making it to this event as it's a terrific step forward in her career.”

Saratoga Catholic 14, Mekeel Christian

Academy 12 SCOTIA— Trailing 10-2 after four and a half innings, Saratoga Catholic stormed back to defeat Mekeel Christian in eight frames.

Chris Larsen produced the game-winning two-RBI triple in the top of the eighth for the Saints, which improved to 13-2 (12-1). Larsen finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Down 10-9 in the seventh, Cam Coons tallied a two-RBI double tomake it 11-10. Sean Hart threw 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief, earning the win for Saratoga Catholic, while Owen O’ Reilly earned the save. Coons finished 3-for-5 and Hart recorded two RBIs while scoring three times. Shenendeho­wa 4,

Saratoga 0 CLIFTON PARK — Shen’s Greg Geisel threw six shutout innings and teammate Matt Buckley went 3-for-3 with two RBIs as Saratoga came up short against the Plainsmen.

Geisel allowed three hits and walked one while punching out two. For the Blue Streaks, Ryan Cummings struck out three over six frames, permitting four runs. Saratoga’s Alex Chandler and Eric Beer tallied one hit apiece.

Justin Yurchak finished 2-for-3 with one run scored, whileMatt Drum and Tyler Vyce both contribute­d an RBI for Shen. Burnt Hills 9, Shaker 7 BURNT HILLS — Robbie Knightes hit a two-run walk off home run in the bottom of the eighth to lift Burnt Hills past Shaker.

Danny Maynard had a double, a single and two RBIs, while Ryan McDonnell tallied three RBIs on two hits. On the mound, Ryan Gardy got the win for the Spartans, which improved to 11-5 (8-5). Schuylervi­lle 12,

Granville 5 SCHUYLERVI­LLE — Jake Petralia hit a grand slam and got the win on the mound as Schuylervi­lle defeated Granville. Petralia scattered four hits over five frames, punching out seven.

Joe Braim went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Black Horses, which moved to 8- 7 ( 5- 7). Schuylervi­lle plays Saratoga Catholic at 9 a. m. on Saturday as part of the Saratoga Catholic Tournament.

Stillwater 11, Cambridge 4 CAMBRIDGE — Shawn McNeil hit a home run and contribute­d two RBIs two propel Stillwater past Cambridge.

Liam Kane struck out seven over 5 1/3 innings of work to get the win for the Warriors.

Schuyler Radliff tallied a double and two RBIs, while Jake McCumber had two doubles of his own as Stillwater improved to 7-7 (6-6). The Warriors face Hoosick Falls in a matchup Monday.

Softball

Shenendeho­wa 3,

Saratoga 2 CLIFTON PARK — Saratoga scored twice in the first inning, but couldn’t hold on as the Blue Streaks fell to Shenendeho­wa.

Shen’s Kelly Barkevich went 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs, while teammate Katie O'Gorman tallied two singles. Erika Daigle got the win in the circle, while Saratoga’s Kristi Burgess took the loss. Stillwater 17, Cambridge 5 CAMBRIDGE — Taylor Moore struck out 10 in the circle, leading Stillwater to its second league win of the season.

Moore scattered five hits and gave up two runs while walking two.

Offensivel­y for the Warriors, Cierra Gilheany and Amber Kelley both contribute­d four hits and an RBI. Stillwater (4-10, 2-10) hosts Hoosick Falls in a matchupMon­day. Ballston Spa 4, Niskayuna 1 NISKAYUNA — Ballston Spa’s Abigail LeBarron took the win on the mound as the Scotties earned their second league win of the season.

LeBarron struck out six, walked none and allowed seven hits. Taylor McMahon and Payton Witalec both had multiple hits for Ballston Spa.

Defensivel­y, the Scotties’ outfield shined as McMahon and Madeleine Fitzgerald both collected assists. Ballston Spa moved to 3-11 (2-8). Mechanicvi­lle 15, Holy Names 1 MECHANICVI­LLE — Kirstyn Alonzo threw a complete-game one-hitter to lead Mechanicvi­lle past Holy Names. Alonzo struck out seven and walked two. Kylie Liberty went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, Makayla Martens finished 3- for- 3 with an RBI and Kali Demarco tallied two RBIs on two hits for the Red Raiders, which enhanced their record to 13-1 (13-1). Mechanicvi­lle next plays in the James “Ace” Morabito Tournament, held in Herkimer.

Galway 17, BKW 8 GALWAY — Trailing 86 in the seventh, Galway scored 11 runs in the eighth to beat BerneKnox Westerlo. Sabrina Williams recorded two RBIs on two singles, while Ariann Ceroalo tallied a double, single and an RBI in addition to getting the win in the circle.

Jessi Uline and Jesse Freebern added two hits apiece for the Golden Eagles, which moved to 511 (5-5).

Men’s Tennis

Skidmore downs UMass Boston in first

round of playoffs WILLIAMSTO­WN, Ma. — Skidmore (12-8) rallied from a 2- 1 deficit after doubles play to defeat UMass Boston 5-2 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Tournament.

With the win, Skidmore improved to 3-5 all-time in NCAA Tournament play and advances to the second round versus MIT, which is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at Williams College.

The Thoroughbr­eds opened the match by claiming the first point, recording an 8- 0 win at three doubles that was authored by Gabe Steerman and Miles Ransom.

The UMass Boston Beacons responded, however, by capturing wins at one and two doubles to fashion a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

The Thoroughbr­eds got down to business in singles play, winning four matches in straight sets to move into the second round. Skidmore’s No. 2 singles player Miles Ransom won 6-1, 6-0 to tie the match at two all.

Jeremy Sherpa’s 6-0, 62 win at No. 1 singles gave the Thoroughbr­eds the lead for good. Next off the court with a win for Skidmore was No. 4 Gabe Steerman who won 6-3, 60. Danny Knight then closed out the match with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win at No. 3.

Youth Soccer

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga U10 Girls Flash team defeated Highland A 6-1. Scores on the day were Harper Sinclair ( 2), Erin Berls ( 2), Avery Waters and Emme Baldwin. Mia DiBlasi, Addy Ferrell, Schuyler Eddy and Kate Claeson all provided assists.

Saratoga U10 Girls SkyBlue lost 5- 0 to Cambridge. Chloe Murphy, Hannah Merritt, Erika Sudigala and Ava Schneider all had several shooting opportunit­ies for the team.

Saratoga U10 Girls Flash defeated Highland B 4-0. Goals were scored by Addy Farrell (2), Avery Waters, and Erin Berls. Kelsey McFadden, Harper Sinclair, Berls and Waters all tallied an assist. Waters and Annie Naughton both posted their first shutouts of the season.
