Dozens of tickets issued in seat belt campaign

SARATOGA SPRINGS>> Members of the Saratoga Springs Police Department participated in the national campaign “Click It or Ticket, Day or Night” from May 19 to June 1.

“Click It or Ticket,” which this was a part of, is a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration campaign aimed at increasing the use of seat belts among people in the U.S.

The campaign relies heavily on targeted advertising in conjunction with increased enforcement.

During every month in 2011, an average of 10 motorists in Saratoga County who did not where a seatbelt were injured severely enough to require hospital treatment, according to a news release from the city police department.

Grant funding from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee gave Saratoga Springs police officers the opportunity to conduct numerous directed patrols, as well participate in a seat belt compliance checkpoint, during the two-week period.

On May 28, Saratoga Springs police partnered with the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office and the Canadian Pacific Railway Police to conduct a checkpoint on Route 50 near the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. The checkpoint yielded a total of 46 uniform traffic tickets being issued between all the agencies involved that day.

Notably, these citations included four seat belt violations, two aggravated un- licensed operations and one operating a vehicle without an interlock device.

Additionally, the checkpoint yielded three arrests for unlawful possession of marijuana and one arrest for seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Overall, enforcement from the Saratoga Springs Police Department during the two weeks yielded 78 uniform traffic tickets issued. These citations included 44 seat belt violations and various other moving and equipment violations. Four arrests were made for aggravated unlicensed operation.
