The Saratogian (Saratoga, NY)
1 You’ve lived in Clifton Park a long time but you didn’t grow up here. Where did you grow up and how did you come to make your home in southern Saratoga County?
I grew up in Mt. Vernon and White Plains, New York. As an adult I lived in Pittsburgh for three years before moving to Clifton Park in 1968. We moved due to a job transfer. I became involved in St. Edward’s Church where I’ve made lifelong friends.
2 What motivated you to make your first run for town clerk?
I became secretary to the town Parks and Recreation Commission and Fire Advisory Board in 1980and then in 1989I applied for the position of deputy town clerk. I served under the most amazing mentor and friend, Millie Peck. When Millie decided to retire in 1991 I ran for the position of town clerk, a position I’ve held since 1992.
3 What are the main duties of town clerk?
The main duty of the town clerk is clerk to the Town Board and preparing minutes of Town Board meetings. Once the records of the meetings are transcribed they become the legal and historical record of the town. The minutes of the town date back to 1828 when it was incorporated. The Town Clerk’s office is also responsible for all licensing, issuing handicap parking and peddlers’ permits, along with research and notary services. The clerk is records management officer as well as registrar of vital statistics.
4 What is the most interesting thing you’ve seen or done as town clerk?
I’ve had some wonderful experiences as town clerk – issuing marriage licenses for friends and family and grand openings and ribbon cuttings come to mind. But one ribbon cutting that stands out is the opening of Northway Exit 8A in 1994. I’m also very proud to be a founding member of the Clifton Park Community Chorus, Not So Common Players theater company, and Shenendehowa Dollars for Scholars.
5 What other profession has always held an interest for you?
In my younger days I would have liked to fall asleep and wake up a nurse or maybe a backup singer but actually, I think I’ve found my niche.
