Be Genuine in Your

Condolences

Many of the popular expressions which are meant to console others are worn-out clichés which can be offensive. Telling someone that their loved one who has recently died is in a better place may or may not be true, but it almost certainly sounds like you are minimizing their loss. Likewise, telling someone that you know how they feel or that time will heal all wounds may come across as arrogant and insensitive. You don’t necessarily know how or what the other person is feeling and time may never completely erase the pain which the grieving person is feeling. The best advice in expressing your condolences is to be genuine, tell the other person that you are sorry for their loss, and be willing to just be there for them. They probably don’t want or need advice, or flowery words, and they certainly don’t want to hear worn-out clichés.
