October events set at Moreau Lake State Park

MOREAU >> The following events are planned for Moreau Lake State Park in October.

October 1 — Trails Day (9 a.m.-2 p.m.) Staff and volunteers will be working on the new trail system on the Lake Bonita acquisitio­n. Bring work gloves, water and snacks. Lunch will be provided.

October 4 — Inclusive Nature Class (4 p.m.) This class is geared directly towards schoolaged children who have IDD, are on the spectrum or have an IEP. Class will consist of a 10-15 minute presentati­on with many visual aids and then will head out on a trail walk, which will last about 40 minutes, to continue learning.

Each class participan­t must have an adult with them, and family members and siblings are welcome to attend. Class space is limited and registrati­on is necessary.

October 6 — Kneehigh Naturalist­s (10 a.m.) This class is intended for children ages 2-5 and their parents/guardians. Kids will discover different themes of nature with a short story and handson experience­s.

October 7 — Potter’s Point hike (1-3 p.m.) Join a park educator on this easily navigable and trail-free parcel of the park with views of the Hudson River.

October 8 — Moreau Lake fishing trip. (9 a.m.-noon) Only two seats are available in the boat. Call to reserve one; (518) 793-0511.

October 11 — Lake Bonita hike (10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) A park educator will lead this hike along the new property that just opened to the public.

October 13 — Ridge Run (9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) A fun hike along the ridge of the Palmertown Range. Bring a lunch and water.

October 14 — Moreau Full Moon Kayak Trip (5-7 p.m.) A park educator will lead the way while pointing out what Mother Nature has to offer. Spaces are limited; fees apply.

October 17 — Red Oak Ridge hike (1-3 p.m.) This challengin­g hike is about 2.5 miles round trip.

October 18 — Lake Ann hike (10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) This hike leads to a rare community found in New York state; a high bush blueberry bog thicket, a good habitat for turkeys.

October 19 — Moreau Overlook (10 a.m.-noon) Hike up the Palmertown range with view of Moreau Lake from the top; geared for moderate hikers.

October 20 — Moreau Fishing Trip (9 a.m.-noon) Only two seats are available in boat. Call to reserve one, (518) 793-0511.

October 25 — Spring Overlook (11 a.m.-1 p.m.) This short, steep hike will take participan­ts to the top of the Palmertown Range.

October 27 — Baker Trail hike (9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) A loop trail to top of the Palmertown Mountain range.

October 28 — Hawk Road Hike (11 a.m.-2:30 p.m.) Hike overlookin­g the Hudson River.

October 29 — Halloween Walk (6-7:30 p.m.) Sponsored by Friends of Moreau Lake. Take a haunted walk through one of the camping loops. Refreshmen­ts and activities will be available. Advance registrati­on is required and there is a fee of $5 fee per car.

Moreau Lake State Park is located off Northway Exit 17S.

All programs and events are held weather permitting and are subject to change. Call the park office to confirm event date, time and location. Participan­ts should be prepared to spend time outside and are encouraged to wear appropriat­e clothing and footwear.

Reservatio­ns are required for most programs with 24 hours advance notice. There is a fee for children’s classes.
