Blue Streaks cruise to victory in season opener
Saratoga Springs picks up nonleague win at Dietz Stadium
KINGSTON, N.Y. » Saratoga Springs’ girls lacrosse team opened its season with a 17-5 victory over Kingston on the road at Dietz Stadium in Kingston.
Lindsey Frank scored four goals and added an assists to lead the Blue Streaks (0-0, 1-0) in the rout, while Katie Wendell recorded three goals and three assists. Sylvie Waters and Francesca Mangino contributed hat tricks for Sartoga Springs.
Emily Fischer and Abigail Searles each made four saves in goal for the Blue Streaks while Peyton Yourch made two saves. SOUTH GLENS FALLS 19, GLENS FALLS 11 » Annika Kreppin dominated the contest with 10 goals while Eric Paton added four goals and Gabriella Kreppin recorded a hat track for South High in a Foothills Council win. Lauren Willis had two assists for the Bulldogs (1-0, 1-0).
Baseball
HOOSIC VALLEY 13, CAMBRIDGE 0» Hoosick Valley’s baseball team scored early and often to earn a 13-0 opening day Wasaren League win over Cambridge (0-1) Monday. Kody Gillespie had a single and double and Blake Wiegert recorded two singles in the victory.
Ethan Caiazza went four innings to earn the win on the mound for Valley (1-0).
Senior Jon Colligan entered in relief for two innings before Brett Norman closed the contest.
Softball
MECHANICVILLE 15, SARATOGA CATHOLIC 1 >> Erin Salvadore pitched a complete-game, three-hit shutout with five strikeouts and one walk to earn the win in the circle for the Raiders. Taylor Grayson had four singles to lead the Mechanicville offense. Victoria Alvord took the loss for the Saints and Cassidy Hayner had the team’s lone RBI. WATERFORD-HALFMOON 5, HOOSICK FALLS 3 >> The Fordians won a battle of Wasaren League rivals played at Lansingburgh Monday.
Boys tennis
BURNT HILLS-BALLSTON LAKE 9, BALLSTON SPA 0 >> Ryan Vullo won 6-4, 7-6 (1) against Pete Gonzales in first singles to spark the Spartans to a Suburban Council shutout. Burnt Hills’ team of Bradley Albright and Alex Kayser topped Drake McDonough and Nick Goodwin 6-1-6-0 in the first doubles match. SARATOGA SPRINGS 9, SHAKER 0 >> The Blue Streaks’ David Roman beat Shaker’s Ashutosh Yaligar 6-1, 6-3 in first singles to set the tone for a shutout Monday. Max Lee won a three-setter over Cameron Germaine 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 at fourth singles in the most competitive match of the day.
Area bowling
SUPERSTARS MIXED LEAGUE >> Mike Mulligan recorded a high single of 244 and weely-high 689 triple in the Superstars Mixed bowling at Spare Time Clifton Park. Bob Martz had the next-highest score with a 244-689. Colleen Mulligan had the high women’s triple of 468 while Connie LaPierre rolled a 446.
College swimming
SARATOGA GRAD CONBOW WINS AWARD >> William Smith College senior Caroline Conboy, a Saratoga Springs grad, was named the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association’s Barbara Radef Award recipient. She is the first Heron to win the award since 2002 when Kelly VanGorden, a 2010 Heron Hall of Honor inductee, was the recipient.
The Barbara Radef Award is given to a senior female swimmer or diver who has demonstrated outstanding athletic ability, met acceptable academic standards of her school, has outstanding performances at the conference level, and distinguished performance at a higher level of competition.
Conboy, a psychology major, is a four-time AllAmerican for the Herons. The William Smith record holder in the 50yard breaststroke, the 100 breaststroke, the 200 breaststroke, the 100 individual medley, and the 200 IM, along with three relays, posted NCAA qualifying times in three of her four seasons as a Heron.
Youth gymnastics
DALLAS STRIKES GOLD AT STATES >> Ava Dallas, 14, of Wilton won first place in the vault in the Level 8 (Junior C Division) at the New York State Gymnastics Championships held March 31-April 2 at Rockland Community College in Suffern, New York. Dallas, competing for Stepping Star Gymnastics based in Ballston Spa, scored a personalbest 9.55 on the vault to win the title. In addition to the vault, Dallas made the podium on the uneven bars (third place with a personal-best of 9.50) and the floor exercise (fourth place with a score of 9.25). Her all-around competition score of 37.20 was also a personal-best and good for 4th place. Dallas’ all-around score and qualified her for the all-star team representing New York State at the upcoming Northeast Regional Competition being held in Springfield, Mass., on April 22-23. The regional competition brings together the best gymnasts from New York, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.
