CORINTH, N.Y. >> More than $24 million in state funding for a new sewage treatment plant was factored into the village’s 2017-18 budget and won’t affect plans to drop Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office patrols, Mayor Dennis Morreale said Monday.

The village board recently voted not to renew its roughly $350,000-per-year contract for deputies to patrol the village, in order to lessen the impact of dramatically rising water and sewer taxes.

However, many people opposed to the move are expected to attend a meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Corinth firehouse.

On Thursday, the state announced that Corinth is in line to get $24.2 million to help pay for the planning, design and construction of a new sewage treatment plant, along with sanitary sewer and pump station replacements.

The funding includes a $5 million grant and $16.5 million zero-interest loan.

Sewage system upgrades are part of the $36 million in infrastructure improvements the village is attempting to implement.

The village recently built a new $2.8 million water treatment plant, with no state funding, and is doing considerable street paving as well, Morreale said.

Although announced last Thursday, the village knew about the $24 million for sewage upgrades several months ago and

took that into consideration when planning next year’s $3.2 million budget, which doesn’t renew sheriff’s patrols, Morreale said.

A petition has been circulated calling for the village to restore funding for patrols, but Morreale has said he doesn’t expect the board to change its mind at Wednesday’s meeting.
